How popular is visual novels in your country?
I'm actually curious, do your friends play visual novels?
I tried letting my classmate play Starry Sky in Spring but she got bored of it but she likes playing farmville though....
It makes me sad that they'd prefer repetitive games than those with plot, characters and routes... but yea...h I know people got different tastes in games.

Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Not at all popular.
I am part of a very rare species in my country; the girls I know just don't understand that, no, I'm not playing an otome game because I'm in any way lonely or depressed about my love life. It's for the story, dang it! THE STORY. STOP LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT.butihavenocomplaintsgettingaguylikethat
They are, however, not opposed to reading poorly written romance pocket books... and crying when the ending isn't what they expected.

Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Not much. I only have like less than ten friends who are playing / have tried visual novels. The language barrier is one of the issues. And I hate it that some people instantly associate visual novels with eroge... There's actually quite a number of people who think all visual novels are eroge...
A-and I kind of think that to a lot of people, visual novels come off as boring because there's pretty much nothing to do but read and make choices... >< Even I fall asleep while playing sometimes xD

Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Sigh..... in my country...no one knows what is an Otome Games all about... my sis do ask me...are you watching anime or playing game? *face slap*...LOL...
Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Very-very-very unpopular. People don't even know about anime and manga, not to mention visual novels. XD
Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Almost non-existent! Heck I'd be happy if I found someone who liked anime, let alone otome games/visual novels. But no. I'm apparently a sad being because I like animated charactes. Well, excuse me, but the characters that I like and Peeta from the Hunger Games (which they like) are equally as fictional! So there! Hmph. (¬、¬)
...Yeah, I might have had such a discussion before. (^v^)

Most of the response here makes me realize how small the community is...that's kinda sad :'D
Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
There have been a recent boom in anime fans here recently, but sadly visual novels are pretty much a completely unknown form of entertainment here. And yeah my bro believes all VNs are eroge too (he's not opposed to playing the Eroges with good stories though). I only got my 2 best friends into playing otome games, so I feel lucky that at least I have someone to fangirl with.
Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Lucky you - mine aren't into this type of games(they're too lazy to read ).On the other hand they do tolerate me when I talk about them,so I can't really complain .I swear, forums like this are a sanctuary.vocaotome wrote:I only got my 2 best friends into playing otome games, so I feel lucky that at least I have someone to fangirl with.

Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Let's be honest here, if we're not in Japan then visual novels aren't very popular. @_@
Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Not popular at all, like completely unknown. They don't even know what it is. Student in japanese may know .
Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Not known at all really. However, I did do some videos on a otome game and got some comments about the game so I know at least some people play them.

This was my first thought. If you're not in Japan or Korea, you'll likely be stuck explaining what a visual novel is.

It's just irritating, no one knows what a visual novel is and you have to explain again and again -.-

Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Even though anime and manga are quite well-known in my country, visual novels aren't as popular. Two of my friends at least know what a visual novel is, but they have no interest in playing. I saw some girls in my school playing this game called MyCandyLove, a dating sim that could be called a visual novel. I also saw Hakuouki in one of the game store in my neighborhood, so I think visual novels are still on their way to being well-known in my country! (≧∇≦)

Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
A lot of people where I live are very interested in Japanese games and the like. I remember high school especially noticing how there were SO MANY anime fans going to my school.
Heck I'm friends with a guy whos dad runs a store with games/anime/manga/figurines/etc and right across his store is a manga store. I'm not sure if everyone likes Visual Novels though. The only ones if any they know are ones that have anime adaptions, and they never played the VN itself.
One of my friends plays VNs, and my best friend and I recommend visual novels to each other. But other than that....

Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
My friends are aware of them because I mention it in passing at times. Only one of my friends ever picked an otome game up and played it though. Most of them just accept that this is something I like, and leave it at that.
There are people I've met online who live in the same state or near the same state that also like otome games. I've never just met someone out in public, or even at an anime convention that likes otome games though. It's a rare site.

Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
Not very popular...I only know one other person who has played a visual novel. But anime and manga seems to be quite popular, since I nearly always see someone reading manga or watching anime in libraries.

Re: How popular is visual novels in your country?
To be fair- this is just my opinion though- ~in Spring~ is the weakest title of the bunch. However, it is a logical choice, given the chronological order of the games.
Anyway, here in Australia- at least- where I'm from, I haven't met anybody else who plays visual novels full stop. I know that some have dabbled in the "shock" ones for the lulz, but nothing lasting. You won't find any of them in stores in my region (maybe in Melbourne or Sydney), so my only course of action is to buy online. Maybe translated titles, but definitely not Japanese-only ones.
I'm thinking nobody has bothered to tell Australia that not all visual novels are about sex, rape and/or tentacles. Or maybe Japan doesn't see a lucrative market here because our population is low plus there is practically NO demand.
