Re: Otome Survey Time~
Oh. This looks like a fun thing to do.
GAME MECHANICS QUESTIONS:
BOYS QUESTIONS:
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
STORY QUESTIONS:
Some of my favorites? Well, I've played a lot and I liked most of them. To name a few, Hakuouki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, Dandelion: Wishes brought to you, Yo-Jin-Bo: The Bodyguards, Frozen Essence, and anything made by Pacthesis.
As for hated...? Well, I feel bad because I've seen so many people say they liked it, but I absolutely hated Girlish Love Revolution. It sends a really bad message: that girls have to drastically change their body image to make guys like them. I say this as a guy: if a dude wants you to lose 110 pounds in less than one year, get away from him as fast as you possibly can! You're all beautiful and if no guy can see that, it's their own damn loss.
So, that's it, huh?
GAME MECHANICS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Do you enjoy mini-games as part of your otome experience? If no, what do you feel mini-games hinder during your play? If yes, what sorts of mini-games do you like to play, and at which point in your play (outside of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add to the experience?
I don't mind minigames. But I think they should be kept simple and easy enough to do, especially if the minigame in question is plot important and has to be completed. But the games can be fun. I like to laugh when I see people freaking out over the Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side chocolate-making minigame, because they all complain about how hard it is, but I find it pretty easy. I'm mean like that.
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
I'm neutral on the subject of voice acting. While it can add a lot of feeling you wouldn't get otherwise to a game, it can also be obnoxious if you have a character with a high-pitched or whiny voice. I played one game (it was an bishoujo eroge actually) and I had to turn the voices off entirely for half of the game because of how much the voices grated on my eardrums. But in most otome games, I find the voice acting enjoyable.
3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
For me, the most important buttons are the backlog and the skip previously read text buttons. The former let's me go back and look at something in the event that I push forward by accident without having read the full text; the latter saves a lot of time when replaying the common route and going for a different guy.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
I'm always into the deredere guys the most. At least at the beginning of the game. I like most of the standard "types". Megane are another personal favorite. Honestly, I really like them all.
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
As I said, I like all the various personality types and I have fun capturing all of them. At the end of the day, I could probably do without the yandere. Not really because I don't like yandere guys - I love them. But because when they abuse people, they are forgiven and it's okay because love. I just have an issue with that.
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
I usually end up loving the redheads. They always seem to be the deredere types. I also like green eyes. Also, my guilty pleasure of the older men characters. Yeah. I want more otome with older (40's or so) guys.
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
I blindly experiment with the options at the branch-offs and just see what happens mostly. I don't make a conscious effort to go after a specific guy until I've finished the game once. After that... just whichever guy I thought was most interesting. And if I can't decide, whoever looks like they have the most tragic backstory.
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
I'm the kinda guy that needs to get 100% Completion to feel satisfied. So, even if something bad or weird happens, or the route got a bad case of arc fatigue, I'd keep playing it until the end.
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What sort of personalities/qualities do you like best in a protagonist? Should she be smart, or a bit of a screw-up? Polite, or blunt? Or would you be willing to follow any protagonist, so long as she weren't too despicable?
The problem with the protagonists of most otome games isn't that they're bad - it's that the fans hate on them because they want to be them. Most otome protagonists are actually pretty cool chicks. The anime adaptations almost always screw that up, though. (For example: Game!Haruka Nanami was infinitely better than Anime!Haruka Nanami) I can deal with any protagonist for the most part. Of course, the badasses (Madeleine Valois from The Royal Trap, Hiyoko Tousaka from Hatoful Boyfriend, Felicita from Arcana Famiglia, etc.) are fun, but the more soft-spoken heroines (Haruka Nanami from Uta no Prince-sama, Chizuru Yukimura from Hakuouki, Yui from Diabolik Lovers, etc.) often show a very moving emotional strength that I fall in love with. Even though the point of these games is to get the guys, I always love the girls at least as much. (lol)
2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
I don't think the heroine always necessarily needs to be completely different at the end of the game than she was at the beginning. Of course, protag character development is something that I like. I realized in a lot of games, the heroine develops differently depending on who's route she goes on. The one I noticed this in first was Chizuru Yukimura from Hakuouki, who ran the gauntlet from obedient and reserved in Harada's route, to playfully sweet and outgoing in Heisuke's route. Anyway, I think the best character development is realizing that she doesn't have to change and that she's strong enough to do things she never thought she could.
3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
I... honestly... do not care. I find that even when a protag is supposed to look "plain", I find her pretty and cute. That might just be me.
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
The only thing I literally cannot stand in a protag is when they make her completely 100% clueless all the time. Some people give that label to heroines that don't deserve it, but when I see a truly dumber than dirt protag, I hate her. The exception might be Hiyoko Tousaka from Hatoful Boyfriend, since her barbaric nature and simple-mindedness are played for laughs.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
Marriage plots in otome games aren't often well-done. They usually seem a little cliched or rushed. I do like kisses in games as well as... other things. Honestly, there need to be more R-18 otome games. But I digress. I think the best endings are where the couple is just happy. Even if there's no promise of a forever. Just happiness is the best ending.
2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
There are no words for how much I adore it when the heroine and love interest snark at each other. One of my favorite examples was Heejung and Jisoo from Dandelion: Wishes brought to you. She teased him a lot and he yelled at her and she just said "Yes, yes. Of course you're right," in the tone you'd use with a five-year-old. That said, it works best with tsundere love interests obviously.
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
I love harem endings. More than I should. I should not be allowed to like harem endings as much as I do. Seriously. It's a problem. Of course, I also love the monogamous endings, but the harem endings will always be my favorite. If there is a harem ending in a game, there is a 99.999% chance that it will be one of my favorite - if not my absolute favorite - ending of the game. That said, it has to be done well.

GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
BOYS QUESTIONS:
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1)
I like mini-games as extras, but not as a necessity to get to the next level in the game. The petting game in BWS was cute, but not really interesting. I'd enjoy a card game, or a puzzle.
2) I've played several iOS otome games which didn't have a voice. It doesn't make much difference for me, but some seiyuus voices are SO SEXY that they do actually enhance the.. Hem... Experience... [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
3) I appreciate the auto-skip when it's a game with the start to select which route you want to do, because the exact same story comes back in that part. I don't use the auto-read usually, because listening to the seiyuu or not depends on my mood.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1)
I appreciate the "knight" types. The protective ones, which are serious but cute. I also like the best friend, because the romance usually moves on smoothly. The prince is also funny. Slightly tsundere is ok, but I think you could call that just shy.
2) Tsundere kind of tires me (immature isn't my type). I hate yandere (get a yandere in real life, I swear you won't like that type ever again, even in a game [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.])
3) I don't really care about the appearance. Have you ever seen an ugly guy in an otome game ? I don't have any preference, but even though he's not an otome game character, I like Eren Jaegers wild EYES [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
4) It depends on the game's prologue, if there's one. I'll just take the one with the most appealing personality, and avoid the dandy type. Not keeping best for last...
5) I take my distance when he starts getting freaky [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1)
I'd follow any, she's not supposed to be my own reflection anyways. I did like Chizuru (Hakuouki) though...
2) I like a storyline which makes her become stronger, or more mature.
3) I couldn't care less about what she looks like.
4) Eeeeee ? Naaaaaniiiikoreeeee ? = Please stop squealing like an excited gyaru... You're scaring me [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Chained by marriage and plenty of screaming babies [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
2) Fairytale-like ever-lasting love. Otome games are made to dream...
3) I've never seen a harem ending. I'd like to, though... Ah, oh, wait, the Persona Phantom of the Opera game... But wasn't a happy ending. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

STORY QUESTIONS:
---> That actually depends. I was frustrated with the Valentine's Day mini game in TMGS 1 & 2 (the chocolate making thingy) but I enjoyed it once I got the hang of it.
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
---> Most of the time. I feel the characters more when their voice actors match their personality perfectly. It's like I understand them more with their tone of speaking.
3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
---> Auto-dialog, please, and that button for me to read previous text. Well, I feel like it's more of a story if the dialog just goes on. But I do need that back button in case I missed something important.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
---> The tsundere one or the kuudere one. Why? Uhm, my heart just skips a beat when I'm with those characters. They make me feel all giddy inside.
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
---> None, really. Each personality has it's charm.
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
---> The megane guys.
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
---> a) He's the main character. b) He wears glasses. c) His route's interests me.
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
---> NOTHING can stop me.
---> A smart and sarcastic protagonist would be nice. It kinda turns me off when the protagonist only says "Uhm..." or "Yeah..." or she's just plain silent. I also don't like it when she acts dumb when the guys are making a pass on her. Seriously?!
2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
---> As a shy person myself, I would like the protagonist to start off shy and then learn to get along well with others.
3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
---> Why can't I customize the protagonist?
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
---> Being stupid and clumsy and lacking common sense.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
---> I just want someone to fall for me.
2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
---> I want to work hard for the person I like without changing myself just to impress him.
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
---> I like to keep it monogamous.
Finally, what are some otome games you've loved, and what are some you've hated?

Re: Otome Survey Time~
GAME MECHANICS:
BOYS:
PROTAGONIST:
STORY:
I really liked The Second Reproduction. The story was great, the protagonist actually had a personality, and the possible characters (though only three) were very likeable. What I didn't like about it was that a lot of it was guesswork and you couldn't beat the game without a walktrhough, multiple playthroughs, or multiple saves. Unless, of course, you just happened to be really really lucky your first time around.
While these aren't otome games, they have fairly well-done romantic subplots. The Dragon Age series and the Mass Effect series are pretty good examples of what I would like in otome games. What I didn't like about the Dragon Age series was the gift system. Unless you gave your chosen love interest their special gifts, hidden in random or strange places, you couldn't get their best ending.
My biggest issue with any otome game or visual novel (aside from a dunce of a protagonist) is having to guess or pick a random choice and hope it's the right one. For example, if a guy asks you to pick one of three bands/foods/outfits/etc., and you pick the wrong one, he'll hate you. Or if you choose to go to a random place, hoping that your chosen dude will be there.
- Spoiler:
- 1)I tend not to like minigames very much, either because they're distracting, boring or too hard. The first ones that come to mind are minigames played for money or to up stats and none of them have been particularly fun. If it's a fun minigame and integrated seamlessly, then I would probably like it, but that's a lot to expect from your average otome game.
2)A voice acting cast isn't particularly important to me, but it's a big plus. Again, so long as it's done well.
3)I don't need anymore buttons than what is standard, but I do like a menu to show relationship progress and other stats, if applicable. Otherwise, skipping, auto-dialogue, and scrolling back are pretty-much par for the course. Skipping is a MUST, though, especially if different paths use a lot of the same scenes.
BOYS:
- Spoiler:
- 1)A couple of my favorites are the ladies' man and the tsundere. Absolute favorite that I will go after every time is the teacher, though.
2)I tend to avoid the outwardly angsty or antisocial ones. That is, I do finish every path, but I sort of roll my eyes through those paths in particular.
3)The ones that catch my eye first are the older looking ones (like the teacher, hur). So long as the art style is attractive, appearance won't matter a whole lot to me. I do like going after the glasses characters for some reason, though.
4)If there's a teacher character or a glasses character, I'll go after them first. Otherwise, it depends on the character's personality: tsundere and then ladies' man, respectively.
5)I wouldn't quit their route in the middle, but a certain character would stop being my favorite if he was intentionally sexist, racist, controlling, or just a generally mean/grouchy character with no development whatsoever. Minus points for a rape scene, too. 0/10 would not play that route again.
PROTAGONIST:
- Spoiler:
- 1)So long as the protagonist has a personality at all, it doesn't matter much to me. One of the biggest annoyances for me is a protagonist who is a total dunce, though. "What is this feeling in my chest?" Just once, I'd like it to be a heart palpitation and not the flames of a new love.
It might actually be interesting to follow a protagonist who was the "villain" in that sort of family-fun-cartoony sort of way (like Megamind or Despicable Me). I'm not a fan of darker stories, though.
2)It really depends on the story and what would be appropriate for the setting. Those that you mentioned sounded interesting, but I sort of cringe at the naive protagonist since it's so overdone.
3)When customization isn't possible, I'd prefer a more average-looking protagonist. That is, not so gorgeous that every love interest likes her right away and not so hideous that she has no hope for love. Either of those could theoretically make good stories, though, if she had enough flaws/good points to make up for it. But there's actually more space for creativity in the average-looking department than the typical light-skinned, brown haired, no-face protagonist that has appeared in a lot of otome games. She can definitely still have a unique look.
4)Like I said above, a total dunce. I mean, you could probably play off the dunce thing humorously or make it more believable if it were an actual character trait, but a lot of the time it just goes completely unaddressed. The same goes with the naive thing. Short answer: anything goes so long as it's done well.
STORY:
- Spoiler:
- 1)I'm sorry for being really vague here, but whatever is appropriate for the story. If you can achieve an interesting dynamic between the two characters, romance can be inferred with or without a kiss or implied (or blatant displays of) intimacy. My answer would simply be a resolution to whatever conflict that has led up to that point and a definitive answer to what will happen to the two characters in their relationship. For the good ending, simply an affirmation that the characters are in love and that, for the time being, they will stay that way. A kiss and/or intimacy may or may not imply that much. Vague answer is super vague.
2)Either would work, depending on the character. I do prefer a hard to get character, though. The fun is in the chase. Otherwise, there has to be enough of a conflict/drama that the story/relationship will stay interesting.
3)Either works, so long as they make sense and are appropriate for the story.

PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
STORY QUESTIONS:
So something like that. I love all the otome games I've played but I love X-note the best. -cuz it's not just a love game- I've also liked Always Remember Me and I WILL like Hakuouki when I have it shipped here :D
so it's like that '3'
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) Do you enjoy mini-games as part of your otome experience? If no, what do you feel mini-games hinder during your play? If yes, what sorts of mini-games do you like to play, and at which point in your play (outside of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add to the experience?
Okay so.... I don't really like them. To be honest I'd rather read the story than do something pointless or irrelevant. Especially if the mini game is just a mini game -like, it could count as a cell phone app >.>
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
To be honest the only voiced otome game I placed lasted until the end of prologue. ^^'' But I think I would like it! In animes I look forward to seiyuus so why not the same thing in otome games?
3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
Everything written there. *lazy lazy lazy lazy*
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
Can't say I like the delinquent type, but I'd go for the ever-smiling teasers :DAfter all, I love intelligent and sassy type
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
I guess I could live without the I-don't-get-love type >.> But still depends on how the character's portrayed. Ex: I like Ai from Utapuri but I don't like Kent from Amnesia
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
Ehem... I like fairly long hair and like I said aaaalways smiling face -maybe eyes closed but it's for Bya-chan only, maybe
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
Well I start with the person who seems to be the most important. And if there aren't many characters to choose from I'd leave the one that looks best the last ^3^
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
Another favorite guy, pfft
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) What sort of personalities/qualities do you like best in a protagonist? Should she be smart, or a bit of a screw-up? Polite, or blunt? Or would you be willing to follow any protagonist, so long as she weren't too despicable?
HEAD STRONG LEAD. period.
2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
I guess naive to well-informed works the best. (don't know what else to say >.> )
3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
Beautiful character FTW! I'm sorry but I guess I'd like a matching pair. An average girl with a super hot guy is kinda cliché
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
Bitchy. easily jealous, overly coward (oh character development may change my opinion though!)
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
I guess seeing them together and kissing is good. I don't mind anything really
2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
Plenty of chemistry is good! Friendly arguing is good. Overly lovey-dovey is u-uh!
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
If it means ending with a one guy, I enjoy the second. One guy for one girl sorry!
So something like that. I love all the otome games I've played but I love X-note the best. -cuz it's not just a love game- I've also liked Always Remember Me and I WILL like Hakuouki when I have it shipped here :D

I'm not a huge fan of minigames in general. I don't feel like they add much to the experience of any kind of game, and I find them just plain annoying when they're necessary to completing a story, especially if you have to have a set number of points to continue in the narrative.

I really like voice acting, and it's always a pretty big bonus for me when playing a game. I don't mind if the game doesn't have voice acting, but I think it adds something extra to the experience. It just gives more emotion to what you're reading on the screen and I find that really cool.
3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
Previous text buttons are something I'm pretty fond of, especially since I tend to read pretty fast so sometimes I miss things.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
Spoiler:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
I really like the guys that are laid back and are generally just really nice guys (example: Toby from Harvest Moon Animal Parade). I'm also fond of the the shy, quiet ones that you have to slowly bring out of their shell. Tsunderes are pretty high up on my list if they're done mildly, more shy or in denial than rude and stand-offish.
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
I'm not fond of the guys who are generally really mean to the character for no real reason. I'm also not into the playboy types or 'womanizers'. Yanderes also just sort of weird me out, mostly because I don't understand how that is supposed to be appealing.
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
Give me a guy with glasses and I'm set. I also really like guys with blue or green eyes.
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
I usually go after a guy based on his aesthetic and his first few lines of dialogue with the player character. Importance to a storyline doesn't matter much to me.
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
I have to admit, I'm terribly fickle and I swap around who is my favorite all the time. If another guy has a really cute and heart-melting scene, I might end up going for him instead. Or if my target does something just really horrible and mean, I'll probably drop him.
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
Spoiler:
- Spoiler:
1) What sort of personalities/qualities do you like best in a protagonist? Should she be smart, or a bit of a screw-up? Polite, or blunt? Or would you be willing to follow any protagonist, so long as she weren't too despicable?
I like my protagonists to be smart and honest, mostly because that's how I see myself. But I'm pretty open to anything as long as she wasn't horrible.
2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
I don't really mind, as long as there is some character development. I can't stand static characters, so as long as she's changing for the better in some way, I'm all for it.
3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
I like more average looking characters, since I feel like I myself am more average looking.
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
Any overly cutesy mannerisms or being completely passive. I like protags that make things happen.
STORY QUESTIONS:
Spoiler:
- Spoiler:
1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
I like games where the goal is marriage or a higher level of a relationship (proposal or 'intimacy').
2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
A bit of both I think. I don't want a lot of clashing between the two, but I also don't want it to get to the romance too quickly.
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
Harem endings are fantastic if done right, but I'm perfectly happy with any monogamous endings.
Finally, what are some otome games you've loved, and what are some you've hated?
Like I've said, I really haven't played a whole lot of otome games, mostly just games with dating sim elements in them. That said, I like the Harvest Moon series (especially Animal Parade) because while it is mostly about farming, the relationship you build with your bachelor of choice is often super cute. I also like the Starry Sky and Uta no Prince-sama games. I also played the original Planet-s game and I loved it (even if it was a bit short). I've played Magical Diary Horse Hall and never seemed to do anything right so I ended up not liking it too much.
Hope that helps!

Re: Otome Survey Time~
I play as many English and (a few) Japanese otomes as I can get my hands on so I hope I can help!

STORY
I've loved and cherished The Second Reproduction for it's originality, gorgeous art, sexy yet not smutty scenes, kick-butt heroine, heartbreaking bad ends, and heart filling good ends. Winter in Fairbrook is so well done! It's just great. And sweet, and lovely, and fun, and well written. Just simply a good game. I also like the character development of the MC from lazy to self sufficient and caring. Yo-Jin-Bo cause it's silly, with some occasional cool art, and one or two super heart tugging routes (Ittosai). I also (surprisingly) enjoyed Number Days! Was just a crazy cool story idea, so imaginitive, some intense moments and some cute characters. LOVE the Royal Trap. Madeleie and her prince are so cute together while remaining honest. Not all the endings though some were a little weird. Oh and Uta-no Prince-sama is a fav because they're all gorgeous. Finally Tokimeki Memorial is awesome and although a little repetitive totally worth it for all the wonderful moments with the guys and the range of the types of guys and how you went about getting them.
PHEW! I'm done I'm a newbie to the site so I hope this was helpful! Thanks for asking by the way now I have opinions in written form to talk about!

Other times when they become a hassle and a little stressful to beat, like a whole relationship depends on the outcome, that's when I dislike them. Whenever in play is A-Okay with me, maybe NOT during super romantic about - to - kiss - them scenes If an otome or VN has a mini game I'd love the option after maybe 3 attempts to win their could be a way to opt out and get a neutral score like instead of awful or great just good.
2) I see it as a bit of a bonus, but not a dealbreaker by any means. I enjoy hearing the guys different voices and expressions (even if I can't understand the language all that well) but don't mind it if it's not there. I'm even okay with the MC being voiced it doesn't hinder my ability to out myself in the game The only thing I dislike is if it;s only half and half voiced. Like only snippets? Full on voices or nothing x)
3)[b style="font-style: italic;"] I always want a button that lets me read previous text. Sometimes I'm in such a reading rush to find out what happens next I skim over things and then click too fast and poof! Now I've missed a romantic phrase or an important plot point because of my over excited fingers! I also like dialog-skip buttons especially when it comes to doing a path I haven't done before and fast forwarding through information I already know. Other than that I click/read at my own pace so no real need for auto-dialogue buttons.

- 4) I love options when it comes to the boys! Although I have ones I love more, I still enjoy all the routes! Personally I tend to pick the cold/uninterested guys who I know I can warm up to me! I'm also a sucker for blond hair and blue eyes no matter what their type is. Meganes all cool! I also like the bad boys and the darker in turmoil characters. And I love the nervousness and care of a boy next door character or an energetic/positive character but they're usually not my favorites. And I'm just not much of shota person. I am not too big into beautiful long haired graceful characters either but I can see their appeal. Love teachers they just create this whole new dynamic!

Usually without pre-thinking it I go for the princely "main" guy and then diverge from there. If there is a blond guy who just met the character and doesn't say much or says something a little harsh, I'm on it! Or if there is an immediately evident "bad character" who will take the heroine down an entirely different path I'm on that too! Or a teacher who looks good! I never go for the shy or best friend character first off they're usually my third choice (sometimes second). Whoever after the initial intro sparks my interest whether it be from their backstory, relationship with the MC, looks or dialogue.
PROTAGONIST
- SPOILER:
- 8)I like both the kick-butt I'll save myself then make out with you heroine AND the caring genuine work hard and smile when you see who I am heroine they both have merits! The caring one reminds me to be positive and do my best, while the kick-butt one reminds me of my strengths and will. I can bend my imagination to be either of them. Although I think it would be a super cool idea if you could have an option of which type to be with each route. It would require tons of work and re-writing of the same route just with a different MC but I think it would add so much more. I've loved Madeleine Valois (The Royal Trap) and Chris (The Second Reproduction) as much as I've loved say Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket) and Haruka Nanami (Uti no Prince-sama)!
9) I like when the protagonist maybe changes her opinions about certain people or viewpoints, but also sticks to her guns. It's weird to put into words but I want her to become more herself within each route. Like more her true self with this guy or that guy. She's more stong willed with one, while sweeter with another you know? While still keeping the characteristics that she started with just tuning more into them...or something x)
10) I usually find them pretty good looking no matter what! I tend to like ones with long hair only because I have long hair but even that is no big deal. The only thing I hate is when they look super young like a 10 year old when they're really 17. If they've got a figure great! If not great! I just like them to look their age
11) I super dislike when they're just straight up unintelligent. They can be shy and a little inexperienced but never dumb, I like when they can think for themselves and have opinions on things. I love protagonists that are logical and then maybe learn to follow their heart. If their completely unaware of everything around them I don't want to play as them.
STORY
- SPOILER:
- 12) I totally strive for a simple happy ending with them together! I love kiss scenes and definitely want at least one per guy but I don't always require intimacy sometimes it's done well and sometime it feels a little to out of the blue. Same with weddings it's cool to see a wedding CG but that too feels a little rushed. An ending with them promising to be together and kissing is all I need
13) CLASH. PLAY HARD TO GET. I love back and forth banter between the MC and her guy. Winning each other over is one of my favorite parts, if he immediately loves you it's nice and sometimes sweet but not breath holding fun and effort! But i know it only works like that for certain characters. The boy next door usually immediately likes you (which is why I don't often pick him) which can become either a bit annoying or super sweet. I like when that kinda character goes against type even just for a moment like maybe he fights with the MC about how much he likes her, but if he's just all over her it's just kinda annoying. I like when my MC has enough chemistry with a character TO banter! It bonds them and makes me laugh and feel connected.
14) I like to have the option of a harem ending, but I love me some monogamous pairings! I want it to be just my MC and my guy, because while I'm playing on route it's just that an alternate route I don't feel like I'm ditching the other guys (well occasionally) because I know I'll get to them and have monogamous things with them as well.

Re: Otome Survey Time~
Man, I had a ball with these questions!
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Do you enjoy mini-games as part of your otome experience? If no, what do you feel mini-games hinder during your play? If yes, what sorts of mini-games do you like to play, and at which point in your play (outside of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add to the experience?I have a love-hate relationship with mini-games.While I often find them necessary to make things more interactive and interesting instead of only focusing on visual novel text dumping, at the same time I can't help but get irritated when forced to play the darn things over and over again, especially if they are quite difficult to clear the first time. I think too much focus on mini-games in advancing the plot also usually demotivates players in wanting to clear the routes. I remember rage quitting my first route in Utapri when I continued to stuff up the rhythm game. On EASY MODE. (Even though I'm quite good at Stepmania...OTL)Nevertheless, I did enjoy the mini-games of some otome games, such as the pillow fight and Valentine chocolate making ones in Tokimemo GS.Personally, I think the mini-games during gameplay should be able to be skipped for those who only want to proceed with the storyline while still allowing gamers who want to play the mini-games.2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?I'm actually not very picky with voice-acting in otome games. Of course, I do have some favourites, but usually I'm fine as long as the characters don't sound horrible. One thing that bothers me though is the lack of diversity in the voice casts. I understand that certain voice actors have many supporters who wish to see more characters being voiced by them, and yes, I respect their talents and enthusiasm in their voice acting works. But often I find myself rolling my eyes when I hear a familiar voice for the tenth time. I realise that it's inevitable popular voice actors get roles in the most number of games, but it wouldn't hurt to introduce voice actors who rarely participate in otome games, or even new and budding voice actors who may have the perfect voice to make the gamers swoon.:oops:3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?In terms of during gameplay, I find it especially convenient when games have the option to read previous texts, since I sometimes skip through the game too fast and miss out some of the dialogue that seem interesting. The skip option is also very useful in clearing all of the different ends.
Another feature I like is the stat where they show you how much the characters like the heroine so far, since it gives you an idea of whether you've chosen the right decisions to get the man.
In terms of after gameplay, I guess little bonuses other than the CG gallery are nice to see, such as mini-games, silly short stories and the BGM playlist.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)Usually either the cute, energetic and outgoing types or the quite, gentle and shy types. Actually, the pure and naive guys in general. I love how most of them turn out to be really sweet and affectionate to the heroines. However, yanderes are also my guilty pleasures.:twisted:2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?Cheesy playboys, tsunderes taken up to eleven, annoying pranksters who express their "affection" through wanting to make the heroine's life a living hell, abusive douchebags who are apparently justified with a sad, dark past...I'll leave it at that.3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)Black/brown/blonde spiky or straight hair, droopy eyes...actually, I don't really mind appearances except for overly long hair and glasses.4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?I won't lie, I always judge by their looks first, and luckily they often turn out alright for me. But there are guys whose appearances I'm initially turned off but ultimately enjoy their routes the most.5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?If his route turns out to be filled with unnecessary angst and whining, or if the "love dodecahedron" or "bloodthirsty fanclubs out to get you" scenarios become too much to bear.
You can say I usually prefer protagonists who are good-natured but aren't afraid to stand up for themselves, but any heroine with a tolerable character is generally fine for me. I welcome the idea of giving more unique personalities to heroines, although I'm also conscience of the importance of leaving them as "blank slates" for players to insert themselves into and imagine they're the ones romancing the guys. I guess the whole debate of whether or not to develop a strong character for the protagonist lies on the personal taste of each otome gamer. I personally play otome games as a third party, a spectator who watches how the relationship between the heroine and the designated guy gradually develop. Hence, as if I'm reading a romance novel. On a side note, I've always wondered if there are otome games that feature protagonists who are delinquents, or at least rowdy and badass? Sure, this type of heroine wouldn't be well-received (especially in Japan for all the obvious reasons of social feminine values), but I thought it would be interesting to see the heroine barging in and rescuing the guys like a boss, after playing so many games where ALL the guys swoop in at the right time to save the girl after she tries to do something on her own and fails big time.2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?Character development of the protagonist? Now that is a rare and valuable feature that should be given more nurture and care to properly grow in the otome game industry.:affraid:To me, any development in the heroine's character should be a fresh and satisfying experience. Why? Most of the games I've played rarely seemed to focus on the growth of the heroine. (Or perhaps it was just me sometimes only skimming through the 5 minute monologues/thoughts of the protagonists.) In any case, the majority of games revolve around the development of the relationship between the couples. (Which is, to be fair, the WHOLE POINT of otome games.) Many of these developments include scenarios where the heroine is put into the role of the damsel in distress in order for the boy to look heroic and gorgeous, or is to become an ideal role model of a devoted and feminine lover who is allowed to heavily rely on her man to fix all the problems around her.To put it shortly, in my opinion from the games I've played so far, I don't think character development of the protagonist plays a major importance as much as the development of the relationship between her and the guy. Nevertheless, it is a feature that every character has the right to experience and enhance the gameplay of players.3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?I usually prefer protagonists looking pretty, or at least unique and eye-catching. It makes things more believable when the heroine is physically appealing, especially in games where it is implied everyone initially at least has some interest in her. However, the visual of the heroine doesn't really seem to matter in most of the games anyway (with some poor souls not even getting a decent pair of eyes) , so overall the heroine's appearance doesn't cause much drama for me.4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist? While they can be endearing in small doses, doormats and klutzes who continue to whimper and sniffle throughout the whole course of the games ruin it for me. They get plenty of chances to take the initiative, stand up against their douchebag love interest or even save themselves from the smallest problems, but they hardly take the opportunity and wait for some cliche miracle to happen. You can argue that they actually do get things done once in a while, but these usually end up being cringe-worthy blunders that were only invoked to create a crack for the love interest to squeeze in and rescue the heroine.
An exception however is historical or fantasy otome games, where the heroine's passiveness is more or less justified by how society back then expected females to act like they're the property of their fathers or husbands.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?A satisfying and heartwarming conclusion of the romance, I guess. The marriage ends are usually my favourite, but there are some guys who I can't picture being in a wedding tuxedo standing in the aisle with their beloved heroine, and should just get a conclusion with a simple scene of intimacy.2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?It depends, really. I've come to like some couples that start off like they're fire and water and gradually fall for each other, as well as a few who start off quite smoothly and become even more lovey-dovey near the end. However, I personally think the plot is more interesting when the guy plays hard to get for a while (but not long enough to put me on the verge of wanting to slap some sense into him) compared to the guy immediately warming up to the heroine and trying to be
creepyall loving and romantic until the summer sun begins to melt from his ultimate blaze of love.3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?Monogamy all the way. I don't know, it can be considered sweet that the heroine can get all the guys, but I just don't want to think of what will happen after the ending... :nuu:Everyonebecomesyandere&theygoallbattleroyale&theyalldiewhileheroineisleftodieavirgin
Finally, what are some otome games you've loved, and what are some you've hated?
My all time favourite is Kurayami no Hate de Kimi wo Matsu, and I've greatly enjoyed the Tokimemo GS series, Otometeki Love Revo, Amnesia and Hakuouki.
There aren't many games which I've grown to hate with a passion, aside from me simply not liking the art style (Renai Bancho, Vitamin X) or some of the characters (Saikin Koishiteru?, Diabolik Lovers).

Re: Otome Survey Time~
So here i go, i apologize, i'm french and when it comes to speak or write i can say that: I SUCK IN ENGLISH
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
BOYS QUESTIONS:
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
STORY QUESTIONS:
I loved Cinders not sure it's because of the romance or just the game itself.
I don't hate anything (of course i do but i can't find something right now)
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1)Mini-Games can be fun, but sometimes (i'm thinking about x-note) it can be hard to continue the story because you fail at those mini games . I'm not against those but it would be better if there is an option to disable the mini-games.I'm more into pure visual novel so i don't mind mini games but i tend to prefer a vn without mini games (unless it's a puzzle like mini games), dexterity is not my thing.
2)A voice acting is often good because it adds more realism for the fantasy, of course it can be also something negative if the voices are "bad", i do enjoy when it's voiced which can be a plus for a story that is not that well written. The critique i have to make is about acting too much (example:the cheerful person that just seems to have too much feels and ends up being a whining brat )
3)i'm very fond of the skip button when i'm replaying the game so i can skip only the text i already saw but i tend to skip too much and sometimes forgot what the character just said before a choice so a button to read the previous text? YEAH
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1)i don't really have preference considering that stereotypes doesn't appeal me (yet i play to a lot of otome games) i like to be surprise , i like dark personalities who discovers a side of themselves they didn't know about, it's still pretty cliché, but i don't know i like character that have a great background that explains why they are what they are.
2)THE SHOTA who is always cheerful, who is a very vulnerable thing (i mean i'm here to date not babysitting ), the shota is actually "ok" when it is a yandere ("look i'm acting cute but i'm SM !!!") i find it funny.
3)I like colorful hair or dark one (i don't like the blond with blue eyes)with green eyes, but most of all: GINGER ALL THE WAY!
I like nonchalant pose, long hair with plait on a side, piercing and tattoos are also fine for me. "Clean" character are good too but i find more appealing a character with a "special" particularity.
4) The looks plays an important part but i often do that: "oh georgous i'll go after A dude
" then B dude or A dude first lines of dialogue "nah i'll go after B dude".
5)If there is rape in it (aaaah BL games...) if he harm children:evil: (unless he is the antagonist) i don't really see reasons why i would stop chasing a guy
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) i like when the protagonist can think by herself, common sense for example, sarcasm and cynism would be awesome ^_^ ! And please, women aren't delicate flower that dream to hold hands with a man, a girl that expect more physical things would be life-saving, or a girl that have other goals than "i want a boyfriend" i know it might be weird to say that in a otome game, but it feels like the protagonist is fated to be weak and breed like in medieval era . For the polite or blunt what about a protagonist that knows how to interact in society but when something bad happens or when she hit her toes on the corner of a table says ''shit"? i'm more into blunt type protagonist than the polite (and sometimes too prude)
2)A protagonist that is well-informed of the world and her future, who's naturally pessimistic but always see the good side of the things. Shy is not the word i would have used, but someone who tries to connect with people in a awkwardly way because of a lack of confidence? But still someone pretty dynamic and passioned when she talks about things she likes .
3) Average is cool, even a protagonist with some "flaw" ( a flaw considering the actual standard of beauty) (a big nose, a deformation at the finger or the toe, some extra pounds, i mean women with extra pound are so underrated voluptous forms are great!) i must admit that i'm a fan of personnalisation because i'm tired of having the same girl thin,no glasses, perfect hair, perfect teeth, perfect skin it's like the makeover of a Mary-Sue into average/girl with no eyes .
4) Someone that give up at the first obstacle,(giving up is not a problem but weakness like that nope just nope) if she is to i'm pure lady-like i never swear, never farts (of course even if it would be hilarious to have a protagonist that farts in her bed, i don't think it would do it ),to gentle, forgiveness is great but it's often stupidity that is shown . So no weak character.( and i know weak protagonist is like the base of otome games but it doesn't mean it is good).
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1)IMPLIED INTIMACY  ......sorry i hate it when my ovaries do that, a kiss is way too little for me. A kiss can be good but before the end of the game and then the final kiss. A mariage? not very fond of those i guess it depends of the route, or maybe as an epilogue?
For the implied intimacy we're in 21th century it is now considered as normal in a relationship, but some girls/women might prefer the idea of virginity after mariage, so an option "nope not ready gotta watch the seasons of buffy the vampire slayer" would be great. I think it's important to respect the possible personal convictions of the players .
2) I like both, clash is fun and chemistry is romantic, everything depends on the choices given and the building of the relationship
3)I like the classic monogamous , but harem can be really cracked, why not create the monogamous endings , one harem ending, and 2 MENAGE A TROIS endings. Just sayin'.
I loved Cinders not sure it's because of the romance or just the game itself.
I don't hate anything (of course i do but i can't find something right now)

GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS

STORY QUESTIONS:

I played a dating sim called Digital love once, and it seemed extremely offensive, had the protag get raped multiple times, and I hated it.
Some of my favourites have been Re: Alistair++, don't take it personal, and I'm loving LRR.
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS
- Spoiler:
1. I love mini games in otome. It's nice to get away from the read-click-repeat aspect of most VNs. The only mini games I actually hate are like... slide puzzles ? The ones where there is a square, and you have to slide around tinier squares in the bigger one to make a full image. They're so infuriating.
2. I don't care one way or the other. I'm not a big fan of English VA over a Japanese otome, though. Something about it is really uncomfortable feeling to me. I think because it usually seems overplayed.
3. Being able to go backwards is a big deal for me in an otome. In case I missed something, or chose a bad option, whether on purpose or accident.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1. I always go for the flirt first, then the sadists, as they're both my type on and offline... heh...
2. ...Shota... And the really shy, passive boys. They're just not my type.
3. Dark or tanned skinned, glasses, black hair, uncaring eyes.
4. Usually looks, but sometimes their first lines and deter me from my original choice, like in Sweet Fuse.
5. If I chose him because I was under the impression that he was a sadist, then he turned out to be a huge baby. If I wanted to date the passive, crying-all-the-time guy, I would.
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1. I prefer realistic heroines. Ones that actually have a clue about what's going on. Who might have an impure thought once in a while. I don't care for naive heroines, who can't even tell when a guy likes her. I like strong female heroines who know what they want and aren't always afraid to work for it.
2. I prefer outgoing, optimistic, and well-informed heroines, but most otome make you play a different personality depending on the guy you're pursuing. ):
3. It doesn't matter to me, honestly. If I had to choose, I'd choose average.
4. I don't think I've come across a heroine I've been turned off from, yet. So, I don't really know. But... The generic soft feminine heroine is getting very old, very fast.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1. Hm, I don't know. I think it all depends on the guy. I dunno how I feel about endgame marriage though, except that I do love seeing CGs for those, and if they have canon kids.
2. A little of both, honestly. I like hard to get, but I also like flirty characters, too.
3. I looooooooove harem endings... I want all the anime boys.

STORY QUESTIONS:
I really hated SummerCamp. It was all too unrealistic for me.
I loved: Love Revo and TMGS1 >u>
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) I pretty much enjoy minigames as long as they're 'do-able', I guess. I hate those ones that have timers, or the ones that are so hard - they're time-consuming. (I hate minigames that have to do something with time? XD)
2) No, it's not really important. But hey, if they get some hot voices to speak, that's quite a plus! (One of the reasons why I like TMGS1 (Haven't played the second one))
3) Hm.. A gallery, for viewing CGs and for listening to music(because sometimes, I like listening to that track found in the true end or something of the sort). If the game has a LOT of endings, I'd appreciate some sort of 'completion bar' or endings list.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) My preference varies from game-to-game. But if it's of any importance, I try to avoid going for the cutesy guys first. I prefer my guys more serious.
2) See #1.
3) Long hair. Red hair. Green eyes. A devilish smirk. Glasses - optional.(I'm not too sure if all these would fit in a character though.)
4) I usually take in the factor of their personality, then their appearance. How they treat the MC and whatnot. (But sometimes I don't do this, and just go with whoever is there)
5) NOTHINGGGGGG. There's a reason why he's my favorite. This favoritism ain't gonna disappear that quick. Especially because I can only decide this after seeing all routes. No matter how mean or evil he might be in other routes, I would still like him.
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) I like a protagonist with a realistic personality. But hey, I'm actually quite willing to try out any protagonist as long as her attitude is explained.
2) I would just like to see her undergo some changes. To know that the events in the story molded her into something.
3) I prefer the more average looking.
4) Well, I'm not too sure. I'm really a go-with-the-flow type. But a really, really dumb heroine might tick me off.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) I just want a happy ending with the guy. A kiss CG won't hurt ;__;
2) Though I usually prefer the hard-to-get, some games start off having those guys and suddenly turns out that they have the perfect chemistry with you. Awesome.
3) I prefer it monogamous. Oh, but harem endings are amusing, if executed correctly.
I really hated SummerCamp. It was all too unrealistic for me.
