default Japanese questions

Post by Loren Leah on 13/04/13, 08:27 am

For those of you studying Japanese, I thought it might be nice to have a place to ask questions and trade information.

I'll be spending a lot of my free time translating, of course, but I'm going to pop in as often as possible to answer people's questions! My credentials: Around 13~14 years of study, 1.5 years study-abroad experience, JLPT N2. If we're lucky maybe our other awesome translators will pop in from time to time too.

If there's anything at all then ask away smile もちろん日本語ポストもOKです!

My Japanese is inferior... I've been learning it by myself for 2-3 years and I can barely speak it without using a dictionary sad I'm probably going to make a use of this thread, considering I'm translating scripts right now, heh!

I just started studying Japanese. I'm self-studying the language. Memorizing the kana at the moment, but afterwards what is the best thing to do? Should I pick up a textbook or something else?

Ohh, are you translating with Bishounen Gemu? Feel free to ask questions in the staff forum or PM me anytime! Actually even if you're not with BG feel free to do the latter lol! But yes, you're very welcome here too C:

BadVision wrote:I just started studying Japanese. I'm self-studying the language. Memorizing the kana at the moment, but afterwards what is the best thing to do? Should I pick up a textbook or something else?
Well, first of all, memorizing the kana is definitely a good place to start. That was the first thing I did when I began self-study back in junior high.

After that, ymmv but personally I found it fun to start visiting Japanese websites trying to read katakana English words wherever I found them -- English is a language you already know, after all, and personally I think having a few words you can read right off the bat is quite helpful for one's confidence.

In general however the next thing to do is mainly more memorizing -- you can start from vocabulary, you can start from basic grammar, or you can do a little of both to keep it more interesting. For grammar, Tae Kim's guide is amazing. You might also check out these Japanese lessons from NHK (Japan's public broadcaster) or About's Japanese section. There are a L O T of good Japanese resources online, if anyone else has any good links please do contribute!

If you really prefer a textbook, the Genki series is probably the most popular in college classes in the US, or at least all my friends seemed to use it lol!

Thanks for the advice! I've heard of some of the links you've posted and I'm sure they'll be useful. My friend loaned me a stack of textbooks too, so I guess I'll be studying on a mixture of that and websites, lol. Again, どうも ありがとう ございます!

My High School had Japanese class, which I took for two years. But The teacher wasn't the best as the students would try and distract him and he'd wind up talking for the whole period without us learning anything. He was a nice guy but yeah. My Jap got pretty rusty and I'm working on getting better again, right now I'm memorizing some Kanji.

For Textbooks my class used the Adventures in Japanese books. They were pretty easy to learn from and I wish I could've bought the book from sensei lol.

hi guys!! o vo)/) i'm a self-studying freshman in high school orzzz i've been studying since september but i'm already the head of my level 1 japanese class, which isn't much to say since it's really slow paced and we have only learned the __ wa ___ desu structure so far and most students can't even remember that structure. よろしくね~
(as for my japanese level... it can be described as me trying to play rejet games and crying the whole way because the easiest sentences for me to read are the ones where a character shouts KOROSU KOROSU KOROSU)

i've always wanted to do some sort of japanese translating job so i could improve my japanese while helping out people too- so i could gladly help you guys out, although there are much better options in this thread already _(:3/ <)_

初めましてみなさん。

I've been (seriously) studying Japanese for about 4 years, now. I finished the Japanese curriculum at my high school and next semester I will be helping out the beginner classes, so I figured, why not help out here as well! (The classes there teach using the Australian "Ima!" textbooks, pretty simple stuff.)

My Japanese is much better when I hear something and translate it to English, instead of speaking or writing, though I can get by with fairly decent grammar. I like to think I'm pretty good at the English language as well, and can translate idioms/slang/dialect and keep the same tone/meaning to the words. (Sometimes this gets really difficult. OTL)

... What was I going on about? Oh- right. For you self-learners, check out textfugu. I have already learned all the subjects it covers, but it seems to be a really awesome resource for self-learners.

This is getting long, anyway. I'll try to help out with language related questions here as well and hopefully learn some things myself~

Edit: Oh, I figured it's worth a mention that I do use 僕 instead of the proper more common 私.

Wow, quite a few of us are studying japanese, すごく嬉しいです!

For those of you who asked for a textbook... well, in my Language school basic level courses now use Genki (even though I used Minna no Nihongo). I think that's a pretty good textbook to start with. In addition, you can always search for other books or websites, or even ask here!! I think most of us, if not all, are willing to help (also, it's also good for us :D)

皆さん、一緒に頑張りましょ!

初めまして!! :D

There's a few small grammar issues here; since you said you wanted corrections, I'll list them:

日本語の勉強を始まりました → 始めました. Hajimeru is for when you are causing something to start; hajimaru is for when something starts all by itself.
勉強をすることが難しい → 勉強は難しい. 勉強 by itself means 勉強をすること smile
けっど → けど No tsu in that word.
日本語で話の時に私は → 日本語で話す時、私は You don't need the 'ni' here, 'toki' sort of implies it by itself.
私は恥ずかしがります → 私は恥ずかしいです. Hazukashigaru is used to describe other people being embarrassed; hazukashii is how you describe yourself.

But I don't think you have anything to be embarrassed about, you're doing great!!! smile That's a pretty darn good level of skill for only having studied a year! I hope you'll keep it up. Are you taking a class or self-taught?

Really? I took a few classes, but now I'm trying to learn more on my own...
And thank you very much for the helpful input!
So I'll try again:
