Otome Survey Time~
I hope I'm doing this right >.>;;
Ello there, I'm in need of your all's opinions on some otome game elements. The following are a list of questions I'd love to have answered. Feel free to submit however many responses you'd like in whatever fashion suits you. Any additional information would also be greatly appreciated, so don't hesitate to ramble!GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Do you enjoy mini-games as part of your otome experience? If no, what do you feel mini-games hinder during your play? If yes, what sorts of mini-games do you like to play, and at which point in your play (outside of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add to the experience?
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What sort of personalities/qualities do you like best in a protagonist? Should she be smart, or a bit of a screw-up? Polite, or blunt? Or would you be willing to follow any protagonist, so long as she weren't too despicable?
2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
Finally, what are some otome games you've loved, and what are some you've hated?
A big thank you to anyone who has anything to say on this topic~!

Re: Otome Survey Time~
I LOVE THESE KINDS OF THINGS!
A'ight, I'll put my serious hat on. It's a poor fit, but it'll have to do.

I love Otometeki Koi Kakumei Love Revo!! and Black Wolves Saga: Bloody
Nightmare. I also enjoyed Starry Sky ~in & After Summer~ quite a
bit. I don't really "hate" any otome game, but Ijiwaru MyMaster is
pretty bad, not to mention any game by Tiramode.

GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:

If yes, what sorts of mini-games do you like to play, and at which point in your play (outside of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add to the experience?
For the most part, no. One of the reasons why I play VNs is because the lack of need for engaging gameplay. Mini-games are fine, but should be optional, like the bishoujo-ge, Symphonic Rain.
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
I think it'd be very hard for me to lie to you guys about this one, given the nature of my lists! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] It's very important, yes. Good voice acting simply imbues the game with life, and is just so much more than a hot guy having an equally hot voice. The narrative comes to life, the emotions come to life, the characters come to life... Of course, ultimately, a good game should be able to do this without voices but for me, it's like adding whipped cream alongside my chocolate cake- the game is fine on its own [the cake], but voices [the cream] can make a great thing the best.
3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
All of the above. Also, I expect recent games to have voice-repeating buttons, or at least, the backlog enables you to do so. The save and load buttons should be easily accessible. Of course, a button for configuration goes a long way. Right-clicking is still fine, but I do prefer buttons because I'd rather right-clicking to function as the "text box hider".
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
I really don't have one preference. I'm cool with almost any personality archetype as long as it is executed well. I do like the older, reliable onii-san types, as well as dandere, kuudere and "playfully" Do-S types.
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
Probably the playboy and prince types. Sometimes I struggle to take what they say seriously because it's too corny.
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
In the 2D world, I have no real preference. If I find him attractive, that's that. I do know that I don't like long hair (I consider this to be anything longer than the lower neck area) and heterochromatic eyes (I find the difference to be jarring).
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
It depends. If I don't really take an interest in the characters as people, I just pick the hottest one. My usual rule is to go for the one whose plot seems the most interesting. I don't use walkthroughs unless I'm really stuck, so I rarely figure out the best "play order" in earlier playthroughs.
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
Nothing. Honestly, as bad as I sound, I'm not fazed by anything. The darker the character is, the more I'm intrigued as to why, or how "low he'll go". To date, there isn't a single route or game I haven't completed.
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) What sort of personalities/qualities do you like best in a protagonist? Should she be smart, or a bit of a screw-up? Polite, or blunt? Or would you be willing to follow any protagonist, so long as she weren't too despicable?
I don't think she has to be book smart, but wisdom can really help. I mean, it depends on the setting, her backstory and age. I use those three things to take a protagonist into account. For example, I usually hate density and over-innocence with a passion, because no teenaged girl of modern times wouldn't have zero clues about sex. However, if she was isolated or the game is set in older times where education of that stuff is compressed, then I'd understand. In general, I like protagonists that are bold, honest and a bit sardonic.
2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
All of the above sound good to me! I also think that in certain routes, she should have negative changes, too. Innocent to corrupt, overly trusting to cautious and so on. Especially if the game is set in an environment in which negative things happen around her all the time. Nobody is immune to trauma, and it should catch up to her in some kind of way. Then perhaps her relationship with the hero could help her with those aspects in some capacity.
3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
I don't prefer it, but it is pleasant when it happens. I just want to see more range. I'm sick of bob haircuts and I'm sick of no-boobs-equals-innocence in non-R18+ games. Moreso, if she's bringing so many boys to the yard at the same time *coughTsukikocough*, I'd expect her to be somewhat beautiful or have sexually appealing physical characteristics. I think sexiness or beauty would be a nice change from "cute".
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
Oooh, boy. Where do I start? I don't want to complain more than I may already have, so I'll keep this one brief. I don't like doormats, emotional density, being too innocent and continuing to be embarrassed over little things for ages. They're the main offenders, IMO.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
Just an outcome in which everybody involved is happy. I don't really care about marriage both IRL and in the 2D world. More specifically, I want to see the hero open up, resolve his problem(s) as best as I can and for the relationship to bring out the best in one another.
2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
My opinion on this changes depending on the guy I'm going for. If he's the playboy type, he should be an easy catch and should have a good reason to be a lot of trouble if he is. If he's the type that's stuck in some deep, shitty problems, I'd have a reasonable expectation that things won't go so easily. I like it when the protagonist has important differences to the guy, and actually makes it known when relevant. It doesn't really count if she just thinks to herself how different they are but acts in a way he'd approve.
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
In general, I prefer to keep each route monogamous.
Finally, what are some otome games you've loved, and what are some you've hated?
I love Otometeki Koi Kakumei Love Revo!! and Black Wolves Saga: Bloody
Nightmare. I also enjoyed Starry Sky ~in & After Summer~ quite a
bit. I don't really "hate" any otome game, but Ijiwaru MyMaster is

Re: Otome Survey Time~
TWO SECONDS BEFORE I POSTED, I KNEW LARAMIE WAS GOING TO BEAT ME TO THIS, I JUST KNEW IT. xD Now I have to go read what she said...
Don't worry there is no specific "structure" for making a post~ Yours is lovely.
Gosh, all these questions are basically broad enough to be their own thread, jeez! So, I know you said ramble, but I'll try to keep it short. xD ... Okay they got kind of long, so I "spoiler" tagged it.
Um, games I loved... Clock Zero, Black Wolves Saga (I decied this was one of my favorites half way through), Desert Kingdom I would consider my favorites. Also, heavily biased towards Diabolik Lovers. Don't particularly hate any, um, (I forgot to finish this sentence because I wanted to read what Laramie saiddddd... @_@) yeah, but I don't hate any Ijiwaru was bad, yes, yes it was, but I don't hate it.
OKAY YAY FINALLY DONE, IM NOT PROOF READING THAT LELELELELELE! I can't wait to see the other answers.

GAME MECHANICS QUESTIONS:
1) Mini games are sometimes fun, and sometimes detracting from play. I don't tend to like more RPG styled Visual Novels and avoid playing them. I wont play Crimson Empire by Quinrose because the gameplay is so invovled.... ewwww, why?!? I liked the mini games in Glass Heart Princess, they were fun, purposefully and didn't disrupt the storyline. There was one English VN I played where you had to solve a puzzle to be able to pick a choice in the middle of the story. Why would you do thatttt?? So obtrusive and pointless. :T I dislike mini-games added for the sake of... Well, adding a mini game. xD;
2) YES, cast is important to me. not so important I won't play a game if it doesn't have my favorite seiyuu, but important enough that it can seriously be a selling point, and affect my overall opinion of the game. Voice acting can really make or break a game, not just a character. Also, I'm a huge dummy head mic fan~.
3) MULTIPLE SAVE FILES. Auto-play, Skip dialogue, Opening PV skip, Gallery CG option, Backlog, options to change BGM, SFX, and VOICE, Um... I think that's it, I mean, I'm not picky I just expect these common things to be in the majority of games, unless it's an older game.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
1) Usually any type of character that ismentally unstable/do-S... well, I'm not sure but I guess I usually go for the less "good" type. Probably a character that has an attitude or is rude, or someone who isn't who they appear to be. I like haraguro, tsundere, kuudere, types, and ore-sama, oranyan, osananajimi and shota are pretty cute too. <_< NO IDEA HOW TO ANSWER HERE I'M SORRY. ^^;
2) Kichiku megane. :I I'm not too fond of playboy types or ouji/prince types, but there are a few Ouji characters I like.
3)Red eyes. Now you know my ultimate weaknessI'm not too picky, I think it varies from bishounen and art style of what I like. No really specific traits. I guess I don't exactly like long/overly straight hair.... Yeah, idk. Bishounen are bishounen, right?
4) It varies from game to game, I try to shove characters I don't think I'll like into the middle, maybe save the obvious "True" end for last. Again, it varies.
5) I will never stop until he is mine.AHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAno, but I will not stop a route no matter how horrible because I need to complete it. But you said favorite guy, which means I will never let him go, ever. *stores bishou in closet*
PROTAGONISTS QUESTIONS
1) I don't think I really have a preference, I mean I guess I'd like a smart, witty, maybe a little negative, and "not-easily-broken" protagonist. No more dense, bland Mary-sue protagonists, please and thank you. I'm not sure if this will help, but I really like Aspasia (Desert Kingdom) and Lulu (WoF series). But more because they made the game really funny to play.
2)I want her to mentally break.Um, I like just seeing the protagonist go through character development, maybe in some cases just become worse instead of improve. I don't have a preference.
3) I really have no preference, as long as she looks like she fits the style of the game.
4) Doormat heroine. Donkan, super dense/dumb. Kurumi (Ijiwaru) and Tsukiko (Starry Sky) are basically the worst. Amnesia's Heroine was bad too. (Especially in the anime.)
STORY QUESTIONS:
1) Achieve? I just want to feel like I've created a relationship and connection or understanding of the character. I want to unravel that characters secrets and understand him/her by the end of the route.
2) No opinion, I guess clashing a little is fun, but um, I just like when the heroine has an established personality and doesn't change it between routes. I don't want their relationship to develop too fast, I don't want to make the heroine kiss a stranger and I can't really feel emotional over a character that gets no development time and the whole thing is just focused on romance. There is more to a story than a relationship. Am I still on topic here... ?
3) Mixed opinions about this, very mixed. I'd like to say monogamous. 3P can be ok, Harem ends make me feel like I made the protagonist into a Ho' though.

Re: Otome Survey Time~
I love answering questions like this, haha. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Here goes~
Game Mechanics Questions
I don't know if I've really played any games that I hated...I guess I didn't like Love & Order very much. I did really enjoy Starry Sky ~in Spring~, Always Remember Me, annnddd I guess I'll say the free game Summer Found Me because when I was thinking of protagonists I liked while filling this out that protagonist came into my head haha. Winter in Fairbrook also had some interesting relationships, imo. I can't think of any others right now ;v;
Interesting questions! They were fun to be answer [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Game Mechanics Questions
- Spoiler:
1.) I'm fine with mini games at whatever point in an otome game as long as they don't become incredibly repetitive. If it's the same game over and over, that's tiresome. It's not too bad if it's like in Winter in Fairbrook, where your progress spilled over to the next day and it wasn't like exact same thing over and over again (though tbh that mini game got dull too), but there has to be a genuine purpose for the mini game, it has to be actually fun and cute, and not too mind-numbingly repetitive.
2.) Voice-acting is great, considering it really personalizes the game and makes the boys/girls more genuine BUT I see it as a bonus, not a must. It's a visual novel, so I think the norm is reading, but having voices to go with that reading is a nice plus.
3.) I think all of those buttons should be included, but especially the one that allows you to read previous text. Sometimes, in a serious or text-heavy conversation, it's really helpful to go back and read what was previously written. If we're missing that, it's going to be really hard to keep track of the conversation. I also think it's important to have something at the end to mark which endings you've achieved and which you still need and to showcase any CGs included.
- Spoiler:
1.) I generally like every different type of character, there's rarely one I initially just go for right off the bat...but I guess if I had to pick one, I'd say the popular/ladies guy?
2.) I hate the stereotypical cold, calculating megane. When I see a character with glasses I'm instantly apprehensive, thinking that he's going to be a jerk. I hate that in otome games that's how it usually goes.
3.) I usually like hair that's slightly longer than usual and I usually like more colorful eyes/hair. But really as long as it's quality art I'll like it.
4.) I generally pick a guy to go after based on his initial reaction to the MC, but to be honest since I always play through every route I most often go with whatever guy she meets first or whatever guy she already has a crush on when the game starts out, if that occurs.
5.) I really don't know what would make me stop. Probably something incredibly dark, where he like permanently scarred the MC or something. Really it would depend on how good the writing is.
- Spoiler:
1.) I generally like witty, sort of jack-of-all-trades protagonists. I get really sick of the super plucky, blunt girls because they're just not who I am at all so it's incredibly hard to pick certain choices and go along because I'm thinking 'How could someone say that!?' since it's so the opposite of how I talk hahah. I don't want a genius MC or a dumb one, but just someone who is wise, self-aware and not going to make stupid choices just for the sake of prolonging the narrative. Having her wit being funny rather than her ditziness be funny also makes the whole thing much easier and funner to read.
2.) I'm really fine with any development, as long as there is some. Even if the story is centered on a boy's development, I want to know that the protagonist learned something from what happened, be it good or bad.
3.) It doesn't really matter to me. A more ordinary appearance makes her relatable, but that ordinariness doesn't mean she can't be very pretty and have some very pretty features. It should suit the narrative and the story, really. I dislike when game creators, however, feel like they either need to have a super sexy protagonist or a really ordinary protagonist who constantly says 'look at me, I'm so plain. Why do people like me?'
4.) I'm okay with most traits if they are written well, clearly explained, and have development. I mentioned earlier that being a ditz can be annoying BUT if she grows from this, then it's cool to start off with. I couldn't read a story about a character who makes dumb choices, as I previously mentioned, just for the sake of moving along the story.
- Spoiler:
1.) It really depends on how the story goes. In some otome games, marriage works good. It suits the narrative. In some, as you say 'intimacy' does haha. In most high school settings I feel like a kiss would work fine. As long as the story is resolved and we know that these two are going to be together, it's cool.
2.) I really think it depends on the character. (I've been saying it depends a lot ;w;) With some it wouldn't make sense for romance to start instantly and it would only be natural for their personalities to clash, whereas for others they would probably get along right away and be able to start their relationship much sooner, you know? As long as it works with the bachelor/bachelorette and the protagonist's personalities it's all good.
3.) I prefer monogamous endings, but one harem ending would be fine if someone wanted it, I guess? I just don't know if that's a thing people want since I generally want a monogamous end.
I don't know if I've really played any games that I hated...I guess I didn't like Love & Order very much. I did really enjoy Starry Sky ~in Spring~, Always Remember Me, annnddd I guess I'll say the free game Summer Found Me because when I was thinking of protagonists I liked while filling this out that protagonist came into my head haha. Re: Otome Survey Time~
Thought I'd throw in my answers here... my preferences aren't very typical but I hope this helps somehow
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
BOYS QUESTIONS:
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
STORY QUESTIONS:
An abbreviated list of other games I love... Uta no Prince-sama Repeat/AA/SS, Hakuouki (the whole series), Black Wolves Saga -Bloody Nightmare-, Wizard and the Master ~New Ground~, Crimson Empire, Diabolik Lovers*, Armen Noir, Monochrome Heaven, Starry Sky ~in Autumn~
*this one is proof that there are always some exceptions to the rule. All these Do-S characters are people I wouldn't be interested in in a normal otome game, but the characters themselves are so well developed and the story is so interesting that I can't help but love the game.
Games I've hated...
-Starry Sky ~in Spring~ was boring. I really only liked Autumn because the sensei characters are so great; I hate school settings. I can't even express how tired I am of games set in a high school.
-Amnesia had a lackluster plot with a boring payoff I could see coming from a mile away (yes I played all five routes), the characters were mostly shallow, the heroine literally doesn't have a personality, and Shin's voice acting performance was really bad (which is sad because I love Kakihara Tetsuya). The only character I ended up caring about for reasons beyond his appearance was Ikki. It also took me two years to actually finish this game; I put it down because I hated Orion so much. Because the heroine is mostly silent and he speaks so freaking often, for a while it felt like I was playing a BL game about a shota fairy
-Crimson Empire... actually I didn't start liking this game until I got the PSP version and was able to play on Easy Mode. The PC version has gameplay elements that are way, way too difficult.
-Anniversary no Kuni no Alice... just thought the writing was bad and the characters are uninteresting. No one hit my moe buttons at all. The only strong feelings I had for any characters was wanting a story option to permanently reject Peter and make him go the hell away.
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
I unequivocally hate 99% of mini games. I also hate simulation games. I'm a strict novel/ADV lover; the gameplay I like best is the "choose your own adventure" feel of ADV style games. I'm strictly into the otome genre because I like to read good stories, and I really resent gameplay elements that hinder being able to see the story when I want to see it -- games that lock away their story behind things like "you have to raise your MC's stats a certain way and plan activities each week" or "this person might show up randomly at this place and time and you have to be there" or the like lose me fast, because they're not giving me any story to keep me interested. Rather than put up with this level of hassle I'd rather just play something where I can have the story now.1) Do you enjoy mini-games as part of your otome experience? If no, what do you feel mini-games hinder during your play? If yes, what sorts of mini-games do you like to play, and at which point in your play (outside of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add to the experience?
The only mini games I've ever liked are the music games in the Uta no Prince-sama series; they're short, easy, and occur only once per chapter, where the rest of the chapter is nice substantial ADV style plot. I will put up with mini games if they're very easy, and I can deal with RPG style systems like Arabians Lost where the stat raising is simple and largely optional, but stuff on the level of a TokiMemo or Love Revo or Winter Wolves' sim games is too much boring gameplay for me to bother with.
I am a huge seiyuu fan and whether my favorite seiyuu are involved is often a huge factor in whether or not I'll purchase a Japanese game. It's really an all or nothing proposition, though -- the acting quality has to be really good, and to be honest I don't think most English voice actors match up to what Japanese versions give us. In English games with voice I tend to get embarrassed by the bad quality of the acting and turn it off, so for English games I suppose I'd rather have zero voices.2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
The main reason I like voice in games is how much it adds to the overall emotionally moving experience of reading the story. Well-acted parts bring life to characters, help me understand them better, and if the voices are sexy it may even make me love characters I didn't otherwise care about.
My favorite is when games give you a one-button way to skip ahead to the next choice/option screen. I think everything you mentioned in this question is considered pretty essential and standard for ways to manipulate the text in otome games, and I'd consider a game subpar if it failed to include any of them, since pretty much everything has those functions these days. In particular, a way to very quickly skip past previously read text is essential to me. I also like to be able to tell dialogue to autoplay, and to go backward through the history of textboxes in case I accidentally skipped a line.3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
Oh, and I love it when there's an option to attach descriptions to your save files so you don't have to just remember what you were using every save slot for.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
I like:1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
-Gentle, calm and quiet/pleasant/intellectual type adult characters (20s~30s ish, not middle aged/old). For example Sannan from Hakuouki, Oomi from Hiiro no Kakera, Silas from Wizard and the Master.
-I don't really care about megane, but a lot of my favorites happen to be megane characters. I'd love to see the megane "personality" on a character without glasses.
-Characters that aren't pushy or rapey and let the heroine take the lead.
-Otherwise nice characters who have a dark side, whether they're hiding some secret or mystery, or a less nice side to/conflict in their personality. For example a pleasant guy who's secretly an assassin, or a seemingly cheerful guy who secretly hates himself or something.
-Guys with problems that the heroine can fix, or in some kind of trouble the heroine can save them from. Angst-inducing trouble is my favorite lol.
-Shotas or genki types (examples: Shou from UtaPri, the green haired kid from Love Revo)2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
-Strong silent types (examples: Saitou from Hakuouki, Masato from UtaPri)
-Oresama/arrogant types, or basically anyone who deliberately does things to piss the heroine off. I hate the dynamic where a guy acts like an asshole to the heroine and she still inexplicably falls for him.
-Feminine characters, especially with long hair -- actually long and not just lame shoulder length. The more feminine the better (for an extreme example, I love Ringo from UtaPri lol). If nobody in the cast has long hair, I might still find something to be attracted to in one of the guys (I appreciate pretty faces too) but my interest in their looks is decreased by half.3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
-Slender characters, whether tall or short (muscles are probably my #1 turn off)
-Painted fingernails
-Traditional Japanese clothing, especially if it's on the more colorful/glamorous side
-White hair (especially paired with green/teal eyes or red eyes)
-Tight clothing or clothing that shows some skin -- anything different from the usual "let's put him in a generic shirt and slacks" or "let's put him in a school uniform" always catches my attention.
I'm the type to go after my favorites first, so after I've been introduced to the cast in a game (I usually go in blind without looking up character profiles or whatever) I'll pick whoever seems most interesting based on how many traits from questions 2 and 3 they manage to tick off, plus whether or not I have any special attachment to their seiyuu. (If they have one of my favorite actors, that often trumps all these other considerations.) Unfortunately with my preferences my favorite often ends up being a non-gettable side character. :pale:4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
If it turned out his personality was shallow and uninteresting, if there wasn't a plot on his route worth reading (no conflict only doki doki flirting, or else a dumb conflict), or if he turned out to be an asshole -- constantly acting mean to the heroine, harrassing or raping her, etc.5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
I like strong protagonists. If I like the guys enough in a game I'll overlook the protagonist being dumb, ditzy, dependent, or basically nonexistent, but I like it best when the heroine is tough. If she's mentally tough and doesn't let the guys give her shit, if she takes care of herself and doesn't need saving from bad things that happen, that's awesome. If she not only doesn't need saving but she manages to save the guys from things -- whether just helping them emotionally come to terms with something/etc, or literally swooping in with sword swinging/guns blazing to rescue them from bad dudes, that's perfect. I love fighting heroines -- my favorite is Ciela from Crimson Empire. Basically, when I'm playing the hero, I want the character I'm playing to actually be the hero. Not the person getting saved by the prince or whatever.1) What sort of personalities/qualities do you like best in a protagonist? Should she be smart, or a bit of a screw-up? Polite, or blunt? Or would you be willing to follow any protagonist, so long as she weren't too despicable?
Also, smart heroines are really awesome. I enjoyed playing as Fiona in Black Wolves Saga because she usually figured out exactly what was going on in the plot around the same time I did (i.e. early), rather than the usual otome heroine who won't see what's happening until someone literally waves it under her nose, and possibly not even then.
I suppose I wouldn't mind seeing a storyline where a jaded pessimistic heroine learns it's okay to feel some hope for her life or something like that, but mostly I don't look for this kind of character development in the heroine herself. I'd rather have her already as a badass and for the guys to be the ones who get character development.2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
I don't need a protagonist to meet ideal standards of beauty, nor do I specifically want her to look average. I don't self-insert, so I'd rather she just be an interesting looking character like everyone else, someone who will make for pretty CGs. I do really like it when the heroine has a unique and cool-looking costume.3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
Someone who's really stupid and can't see things that are right in front of her nose (for example if a guy has been pretty obviously about to confess his feelings to her multiple times, but she just goes on la la la completely oblivious), or someone who can't do anything right and constantly has to be saved by others. Also dojikko/clumsy heroines who are always tripping over things and shit. That is so incredibly annoying.4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
I want to read a good story. That's literally it. I don't care if the heroine and her guy get married, have sex, share a single smooch, or haven't done anything more intimate than gaze deeply into each other's eyes by the end. If there was some kind of interesting conflict in the story and it's been resolved in a satisfying way, I'll be happy.1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
I like guys who might at first appear easy-to-get, but actually have hidden obstacles or psychological hangups. I really hate guys who are tsun tsun or rude to you from the get-go and you're just expected to pursue them anyway. They need to give me some reason to actually like them. I don't like the romance to be too easy, though; I'd rather those hidden problems crop up early on.2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
Every game should have a harem option!!!!3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
My favorite otome game of all time is Arabians LostFinally, what are some otome games you've loved, and what are some you've hated?

Re: Otome Survey Time~
These are some really wicked answers. It makes me curious as to how a native Japanese player would answer them. It would then be an insight once and for all if the current market really reflects what the majority of Japanese players really want.
Especially the protagonist section. It seems like the Western players have little-to-no interest in self-inserting themselves in the shoes of the protagonist.

Allow me to add my two cents, for whatever it's worth. '_'
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
BOYS QUESTIONS:
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
STORY QUESTIONS:
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Mini-games are pretty meh to me. Most fun with mini-games I ever had was the valentine's chocolate making game in TokiMemo GS. I think they're really suited to dating sims over visual novels.
2) VAs are a great addition in Japanese. I think it helps in learning the language when the text is both spoken and written on the screen. I could really care less about English VAs. Regardless of language, I appreciate when the settings menu includes an option to disable voice.
3) Yeah, the usual trappings of visual novels are usually all I need. Dialog-skip is a lifesaver for getting all the endings.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) My first choice is usually either the tsundere or megane character. If neither of those are applicable, I would go after the genki, flirty or comic relief character.
2) I have no interest in angsty, emo, brooding, "omg so dark and troubled" or stoic characters. IMO it makes for a negative first impression when they are characterized like that.
3) Glasses. Suits, ties, hats. Medium or long hair. :Q Other than that, I'm open to a variety of appearances as long as the art style is solid. Personality of the guy comes first and foremost!
4) More than anything, I tend to prioritize how each love interest treats the MC. Characters that are a dick upfront for no reason tend to be dead last in my book. Characters that call out the MC on her faults for a good reason, however, are a different story.
5) Ridiculous behavior / plot points that take me out of the story. Example: When watching the anime of Amnesia I was pretty fond of Tohma at first...- Spoiler:
- until he got so possessive that he put MC in a cage, and she was totally cool with it afterwards
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Flaws are perfectly reasonable and healthy, even cliche ones like shyness or clumsiness. As long as the protagonist has at least one thing that they are passionate about or skilled in, I'm happy.
2) Growth is always good. I'd be most interested in a story where the MC started brash and insensitive and then learned to take other people into consideration. ("defrosting ice queen" style, I suppose)
3) Either way is okay with me. I like it when the MC clearly has her own style, something that makes her unique, like flower motifs, a certain necklace, or cute hair.
4) I dislike the character trait of 'oblivious to love'. More than that, I would like the trend of passive MCs to die in a fire. When every other line of dialogue (if she even has any) is "Eh?" "What?" "Huh?" it takes me out of the story. There's someone who is startled, and then there's someone who lacks cognitive capacity to react in any way to the situation around her.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) A love confession and a kiss at the bare minimum! Intimacy is a bonus. Marriage is going a little far, especially when many otome games are set in high school.
2) I can see the appeal of a forbidden love or rival romance, but I tend to prefer the 'childhood friend / always there' type. That said, I'm not crazy about characters that come on too strongly. (Example: Starry Sky In Spring, I went for Kanata and Suzuya, but not Yoh)
3) I haven't seen any otome harem endings that I can think of 0.0 If it's written where it makes sense, and not just like 'LOL all these guys are cool with sharing you for some reason', then a harem / OT3 ending is fine in my book.
Finally, what are some otome games you've loved, and what are some you've hated?
Love Hakuoki, Starry Sky series and Yo-Jin-Bo. I don't care for Amnesia.

If yes, what sorts of mini-games do you like to play, and at which point in your play (outside of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add to the experience?
I think mini games should be kept at a minimum. A very good example of that was Dandelion by Cheritz and Tokimeki. Touching they guy/ or pointing your cursor at him was pretty amusing.
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
Yes, if the voice suited for the character design then I'd enjoy listening to it.
3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
Skip previously read dialogues
Color-code options that were previously selected
Skip credits

Replay voice
Quick Save/Load
Music Gallery, CG gallery, Ending Gallery
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
Shota
Tsundere
Sports Baka
Megane
Delinquent
Ouji-sama
Sweet Guy --but dense
Childhood Friend
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
Yandere - because I'm not into horror
Flirt - because I'm a jealous lover
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
Great hairstyle
Bishie eyes
Great sense of fashion
Some tiny accessory details that makes them stand out - piercing, bracelet, necklace
Dat ass
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
Well you could never know what his story is not until you finish the game play. So first is looks, then personality.
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
When his route gets boring and the ending is luckluster.
As long as she's not a total idiot, I'd be more than happy to play it.
The herione should express a bit of common sense.
2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
Something like Love Revo, where the protagonist works hard to look good.
3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
Average please.
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
IQ level 0 and being useless (doesn't have the initiative, and does not have a big role in the game progress)
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
For the first otome game release, kissing/dating would be fine..then marriage for fandisks
2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
Hard to get ;3;
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
Honestly I'd like to be two-time...let's keep it to ourselves shall we ^//^

Not at all~ I'm probably gonna get a nice talking-to by my boss if I keep blabbing about it, but I'm scripting for my team's first otome game. However, as we're still in the story-boarding stages, and thus I have little to script, I thought I should try collecting some qualitative data on what our potential audience is into .w.
Unfortunately, though, we only have a $20,000 budget, so we're not gonna have any voice actors ;~; maybe someday, if this one is successful...
EDIT: Umm, I'm still very new to this site, so I have no idea what I'm doing with all of these fancy buttons <.< >.> your post is now pink... uhh... I'll go back and read through the n00b guide again.

Ah, I see, I see! Posts turn pink when you "thank" somebody, and up-votes show a green bar, whereas a down-vote shows a red one.
You'd have to pay through the roof for a decent English voice actor, so I totally understand. However, right at the end of the day, even the best voice actors can't save a shitty script and characterisations for me.
Please feel free to ask me for my opinions about otome games if you ever need to in the future. Or just make another topic or something. ;D Why pay for marketing questions when you can get a ton from seasoned gamers right here, I say!
All the best!

GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
BOYS QUESTIONS:
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
STORY QUESTIONS:
As for games I've looked, Hakuouki is definitely up there, followed by Tokimeki Memorial, Custom Drive was fun but I think that's it. I'm still trying to find more games I can understand since I'm just beginning to get the grasp of reading Japanese. Non I absolutely hate so far though.
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
In terms of games like Uta no Prince-sama, I think mini-games fit because of the whole music theme of the game. But honestly, I think they disrupt the visual novel style a little bit, I know when I was playing Tokimeki Memorial, the Valentine's Day chocolate mini-game drove me nuts. By the time I finished it, I complete forgot who I was making chocolate for again. I guess what I'm trying to say is, the mini-games should fit in with the story, if it's a game about cooking, put in a cooking mini-game, if it's a game about music....well you know.
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
Honestly, as a voice actor myself, I don't discriminate between the well known veterans and the newer guys, as long as they fit their particular role, it doesn't matter to me. Of course, if I'm browsing a site and see Kousuke Toriumi's name pop up, I'm not gonna lie and say I don't fangirl a little bit. (Or a lot) But I know that I wouldn't even know who he was if I didn't take a chance and play Hakuouki, so I always keep an open mind, hoping to find a new favorite voice actor to fangirl over. Honestly, if Otome games had no voice acting, I wouldn't be able to enjoy it half as much as I do. Because then I try to voice the guy I'm romancing myself and trust me...I don't make a sexy sounding guy with my vocal range.
3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
I love having the log handy, it's sooo useful for learning Japanese in my opinion (though I doubt I would use half of that vocabulary in real life XP) Unfortunately though, I'm one of those with a short attention span so I need the dialog skip option, especially on multiple playthroughs. As for auto-dialog, I never saw much point to it really. I usually end up hitting it looking for the dialog skip.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
I guess since I used to be a loner myself, I kinda identify with the whole lone-wolf thing. (though I wasn't nearly as cool >.<) Oddly enough, my perfect example of this is Kouji from Digimon Frontier, he was my first definition of a lone-wolf so anything close to him, though.... preferably older would be nice. >.< I don't find tsundere's and yandere's that attractive but I admit, some can have an appeal on me- Spoiler:
- (like Yunoki from La Corda D'Oro)
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
Honestly, I never really liked the whole shota thing, I think the only close exception was Heisuke from Hakuouki but I don't even know what he counts as. On top of that, I was never a fan of the sports guy either, I suck at sports so needless to say, I'm not interested in a guy who talks about it nonstop.
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
I'm a relatively simple gal, I like guys with dark hair (black, heck, even dark blue's fine), and as for length, I think I'd prefer someone with hair that goes past their chin or at least their shoulders. Oh, and if they do have long hair, ponytails are always a bonus...maybe I'm not as simple as I thought.
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
In Otome games, looks can be important but it's not always what I'm looking for. I need to see if his personality is close enough to mine or meshes well with mine. Usually I get the gist of what he's like within his first introduction. That's really it, if I don't like his personality, chances are I wouldn't be able to stand an entire game aiming from him.
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
Repetitiveness is one thing but honestly, I can't stand when the guy I'm chasing after is in the middle of a love triangle with another girl. I'm completely turned off by the thought of suddenly competing with someone for his affection. I've seen it happen once and I know I never wanted to pursue him again because of all the catty, meangirl BS that I had to go through for his route.
She's needs a backbone, simple as that. I've seen countless times a guy do something utterly unforgivable but the protagonist just forgives him as if it was nothing. I'm not a fan of the whole cutesy, no-you-didn't-do-anything-wrong type of protagonist. Honestly, I'd love to see a character who's really intelligent, witty and can actually get herself out of a few predicaments. Not dependent on Prince Charming to come riding in on a white steed. One of my favorite examples of a relatively strong protagonist is Kahoko from La Corda d'Oro the anime, she has legit dilemmas and does speak her mind. She may not be the strongest character but she's a breath of fresh air compared to playing as a damsel in distress.
2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
I think the shy and naive thing's a tad overused honestly, but pessimistic to optimistic seems like an interesting idea, I'd love to see that!
3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
Not necessarily, though to be honest, I really wish we could design what the character looked like. That way, I think the choice we make in game could at least match our character type (either custom created characters of the ability to actually see you wearing a few different outfits as you dress up your character).
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
Shy, naive and overly cutesy damsel in distress who forgives just about any terrible thing you do to her. THAT. Nothing else pisses me off more than that.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
You know, I haven't come across many games where you can get married to the guy you're dating but if I could do that, I definitely would. But if not, I at least want to see a kiss scene. As for the implied intimacy...I think that's what the R18+ games are for  (Haven't play one but it could be interesting.)
2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
I like a challenge, and I like gaining trust in a relationship the old fashioned way. If a boy indulged right away, I'd start to get a bit suspicious of him. >.>
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
I've never really felt satisfied with a harem ending. I know it can be one heck of a fantasy and sometimes I think "Well, why do I have to choose??" But dating more than one person at a time doesn't feel fair to me and I keep thinking I'm cheating the other guy of something. One on one is my way of choice.
As for games I've looked, Hakuouki is definitely up there, followed by Tokimeki Memorial, Custom Drive was fun but I think that's it. I'm still trying to find more games I can understand since I'm just beginning to get the grasp of reading Japanese. Non I absolutely hate so far though.

of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add
to the experience?
That would depend on the story. If it's a psychological, mystery or anything with a heavy and dark story, I would rather not like to have to play mini games, unless they are puzzles. Mini games would hinder the mood of the story, imo. I don't mind mini games in lighter stories, but I don't want it to be completely focused on mini games because I would get bored of it easily. There must be mini games if the story is about sports. It just wouldn't feel right to me to just read a match. It would be more fun to actually play the match
Anyways, back to the question. Again, that all depends on the story, but I prefer mini games during competition events and outside of narratives for those stats boosting minigames.
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your
otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If
yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
No it is not. I just find it as a bonus that displays how the creator wants the characters to sound like. Voiceless characters can be just as lively and sound just as sexy as voiced characters, you just need to put your creativity into use
3) What sort of
options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip
buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous
text? Etc.?Quick-save and quick-load buttons!!!! Its annoying to re-read or skip through texts and replay mini games just because I want to change my decision. I also don't like to skip texts just because I need to reach the next save point to change my decision )< I also like the dialog-skip button :3 Saves me the trouble from having to do another button-mash fest and accidentally skip through lines that I haven't read
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1)
Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you
play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the
ladies' man, etc.)
I find myself to be interested in the hard-to-get personalities like tsunderes, kuuderes, snobby rich-boys, perfectionists, you know what I mean :3. All because they always have fun reactions when you tease them [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I also like the strong-and-silent, stoic and blunt boys as well
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
CLINGY BIG BROTHERS! Why?
1) There clingyness is annoying. They don't need to overreact at everything that the heroine does! D<
2) They are family, so they are the characters that you see most often in any otome game, which makes them even more annoying then clingy shoutas
3) Incest is just... wrong
4) I don't have a big brother love complex and I never will have one.
5) They are not as fun to chase as other types of boys (not including clingy shoutas and childhood friends) because they already love you. The whole route is about the precious imouto heroine falling in love with her big brother ¬.¬
Do I need to say anymore reasons as to why I hate clingy big brothers?
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
Appearance don't really matter to me, but I noticed that most of my fav characters have green eyes
And yes, I'm gonna end all of my answers with
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
First impressions and storyline importance are what decides the order of boys :3. That first impression can be anywhere from looks to lines to actions. I usually start with the boys that give me the impression that I'm not gonna like them (shoutas, ladies-man, gentleman, clingy big brothers, playboys and yanderes) and I move on to the boys that interest me the most. Then, to top it all off, I go for the boy with the most importance to the story last
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?Either taking my game away permanently or when I get bored of them
- Spoiler:
1)
What sort of personalities/qualities do you like best in a protagonist?
Should she be smart, or a bit of a screw-up? Polite, or blunt? Or would
you be willing to follow any protagonist, so long as she weren't too
despicable?
A strong personality, a back bone to fight back and stand up for herself, has a brain and blunt words. If the heroine doesn't have any of those qualities, I just replace her with one of my imaginary heroines
2) What sort of character development would you most
like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic
to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
Doesn't really mater to me o: As long as it fits with the plot and there is an actual development, I don't care what kind of development it is
3) Do you prefer when the
protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty
(hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
Neither. I would prefer a tomboy or punk looking heroine The ideal standards feel too farfetched for my taste and kinda defies the "it's what's inside that matters" ideology (any boy would fall easily for a beauty queen ¬.¬). The average looking just looks too plain and is really over used. So tomboy it is for me
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist? Not having a personality and/or they are as dumb as a rock (I'm looking at you, Daisy and Bambi [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ) Those are the only traits that would make me hate a protag
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
A confession and a kiss [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] It kind of ruins it for me if the story goes further :/ Though, as an after game bonus, they can add that the couple got married and live a happy life together (like what they did in Starry Sky ~in Spring~)
2)
Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or
share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather
indulge in the romance from the get-go?
Shouldn't this question be in the boy's corner? Isn't it the same as asking "What kind of boys do you like?" Anyways, my opinion is that an otome game should have a wide variety of boys to chase. They shouldn't put only hard-to-get boys or lovey-dovey boys. They need to please as many girls as possible and each girl has her own preferances in boys. Also, the main plot shouldn't entirely revolve on one guy. The routes for the other guys would feel disjointed from the story D:
Anyways, you can look up at the boys section for my prefered type of boys. They're all hard-to-get characters (except maybe for the strong-and-silent, stoic and blunt. Those could be considered hard-to-please x3) that start off with clashes with the heroine and develop some chemistry with her.
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?Monogamous :3. I don't like harem endings because it feels like I'm cheating on all of them boys [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.], unless the harem ending that you are talking about is the "everybody is friends with everybody" type of ending
Finally, what are some otome games you've loved, and what are some you've hated?
- Spoiler:
- I haven't played many otome games because I don't understand Japanese yet x3. I'm the type of gal who can't enjoy a game if she can't read it. What can I say, I'm a big sucker for plots Back to the question. Some of these games are free games that you can download off the internet :3
The only game that I don't like so far:
- Re: Alistair++ (yes, I don't like this game ¬.¬)
The games that I like:
- Frozen Essence
- (P)lanets: Life of Normalcy has Ended (just for Caius, even though the game was cliché bonanza x3)
- Girlish Love Revolution
- Starry Sky ~in Spring~
- Hakuouki: Demons of the Fleeting Blossom (I haven't played it yet, but I know that I will like this game because I watched the anime and I liked it [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.])
- Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 2 and 3 (How can I not like that love/harass mode? )
And I have a question for you [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]:

PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
STORY QUESTIONS:
Otome games I loved where the Alice series from Quinrose, Zettai Meikyuu Grimm, Hatoful Boyfriend, Black Wolves Saga, and Okashi na Shima no Peter Pan.
The otome games I hated were Bloody Call and Under the Moon.
GAME MECHANIC QUESTIONS:
I love mini games as long as they don't take up too much time and don't detract from the story. In the Alice series I enjoyed the card games with Joker that had to be played in order to visit characters from other areas besides the area the MC lived in. The games weren't too long or complex, and were part of the story. I don't think I'd like mini games to appear during the character events though. During the narrative is better. Sometimes when I read a lot of dialogue a mini game is like a refreshing break.2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
I love a good voice cast. They definitely add to the atmosphere of the games. I get more excited when I know the characters will be voiced. However, even if the game isn't voiced I may still be roped in by an amazing sounding story.3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
I like having all the buttons you mentioned. Quick saves and loads are good too. It's also nice to be able to adjust the volume of voice and BGM sounds. After gameplay I like having a CG, BGM, and Event gallery.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
I fall hard for the mysterious ones. The longer it takes me to figure them out, the better. I like it most when the game ends and there are still a few questions that were never answered. It drives me crazy in the most pleasant way imaginable. This character can be from any trope as long as he eventually likes the MC (in a healthy or sometimes not so healthy way).2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
There are always exceptions to the rule, but there are a few types I generally don't like.
-players
-shotas
-guys that nitpick at every little thing the MC does
-genki characters
-do-s/do-m
-the ones that are so cool that they never care about anything and are basically just there as a decoration (I like cool guys as long as they start to show some affection at some point)3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
-super long hair (past the shoulders please, and bonus points for silver hair)
-playful or cold eyes
-anyone not wearing a shool uniform
-slim guys (no massive muscles)
-intelligence and wit
-the sly fox grin
-actual pants (Look at Guillan from Black Wolves Saga for examples of what I don't like)4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
Initially I choose based off of pre-knowledge, looks, and sometimes voice, but I've found that if another character catches my attention before I start a specific route, I might be swayed to go for them instead. That is usually accomplished by how interesting their dialogue is.5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
I've never stopped on a route midway before, but there are some major turn offs.
-If he has a boatload of really stupid issues that aren't even that bad and he gets stuck on them
-If he turns out to be do-s or do-m
-If he rapes the MC
-If he is overprotective or possessive
-If he basically treats the MC like crap
PROTAGONIST QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What sort of personalities/qualities do you like best in a protagonist? Should she be smart, or a bit of a screw-up? Polite, or blunt? Or would you be willing to follow any protagonist, so long as she weren't too despicable?
I like any protagonist as long as she has some sort of strong point. It's the best if she has a few good strong points whether it's physical, emotional, or mental based. She must be good at SOMETHING (there should be a talent in there somewhere). She doesn't have to be nice. She can be completely nasty as long as there is still a plausible reason for the guys to fall in love with her. Weaknesses are fine, since it makes the MC more believable as a character.2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
Any form of development works for me. I'm not that picky on this aspect as long as the characters are actually developing, and the narrative isn't just telling me that they are while their dialogue says otherwise.3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
I don't care. This is probably a bigger issue for people that identify with the character. I've never had the desire or natural instinct to do so, so any appearance works for me. A good story comes first IMO.4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
If she is a complete idiot in every way who never does anything for herself or others, that is a major turn off. I don't want her to be dependent for everything. I also hate paranoia and jealousy when her guy is talking to another woman. It makes me want to strangle her.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
I don't care about the kiss, intimacy, or marriage. I like when the MC has a goal or dream that is important to her beyond her love life. The love can come along the way, but I don't like it to be the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS. Romance can't save a bad story as far as I'm concerned.2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
I like the clash and the chemistry. Both work fine, but I like the romance to be more progressive. Hard to get is more entertaining.3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
I don't mind one or two harem endings. They're usually not very realistic, but they make for some fun fan service.
Otome games I loved where the Alice series from Quinrose, Zettai Meikyuu Grimm, Hatoful Boyfriend, Black Wolves Saga, and Okashi na Shima no Peter Pan.
The otome games I hated were Bloody Call and Under the Moon.

Game Mechanic Questions
- Spoiler:
- 1) Do you enjoy mini-games as part of your otome experience? If no, what
do you feel mini-games hinder during your play? If yes, what sorts of
mini-games do you like to play, and at which point in your play (outside
of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add
to the experience?I generally like mini-games, so long as they're closely related to what the MC is doing and so long as their appearance in the game is only during certain times. For example, I enjoyed the Valentine's Chocolate Cooking mini in Tokimeki and the Pancake Cooking mini in LRR, I do not, however, like the dress-up minis on some of Voltage's games since I see no point in it. I like mini-games that affect the MC's relationship with the boys, especially during special events.
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your
otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If
yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?I'm the type of gamer who, more often than not, mutes the game during play to save on, say, my PSP's battery; the voice acting doesn't really affect me. I like listening to it though whenever I decide to unmute it. I don't care about who's part of the cast so long as the voice fits.
3) What sort of
options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip
buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous
text? Etc.?Dialogue-skip is a lifesaver; an otome game with more than one possible ending can never not have a dialogue-skip button. I liked the little feature in Hakuouki that let you go back on both past text and the voice, I don't know how many times I repeated certain parts just to listen to the seiyuus. I also like, "gallery" features that let you see the CG. It would be a plus if it let you go back on the whole scene of a CG, especially if you're one of those people who like writing plot summaries and thoughts about the guys.
Boys Questions
- Spoiler:
- 1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when
you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the
ladies' man, etc.)I'm definitely fond of the aloof, confident, flirty types; it's my favorite, no doubt. The Bad Boy depends sometimes. Usually the bad boys are tsunderes and I only ever like tsunderes when the "dere" part of their personality is still subtle all through out. I feel like it's such a waste of a character when the bad boy suddenly transforms into a mushy-gushy, twirl-you-around-in-an-embrace-in-public, hearts-and-pouty-faces type (i.e. He's Dedicated to Roses, a manga, granted). It's just...too much. I like outgoing, happy types and the cool, intelligent, husbando-worthy types too. I like yanderes too, from time to time. I don't actually even know if those are types, really.
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?The no-self-confidence, "You're too good for me" types. I get the moe points this type has, I'm just not fond of it. I can't take a guy with no backbone, 2D or real ones.
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)I have no specifics in terms of appearance, really. However, I do notice that I tend to avoid the long-haired, prince type (I have no trouble with short haired princely types). Oh! OH! I forgot. I like the ones with medium-length hair that look like they've just gotten out of bed (messy, curly, spikey, just...all over the place). Yes, medium-length, say Hibiki Kuze from DeSu 2 (also not an otome, still). Aaaand that's all I can think of.
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?I tend to go after least favorite to who I think I'd like best. I basically base this on the trope I think they fit in. Quiet guys first then shotas then tsunderes then confident ones. Sometimes I take their importance in the storyline too. Say, in Hakuouki I went for Saito first, then Heisuke, Okita, Hijirikawa, Harada, Kazama.
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
[quote]Nothing. When I play, I am determined to finish it. They do tend to bore me to the point that I want to stop playing though. What usually brings this on is when the guy has revealed his feelings along with his personality and it starts getting so cliche that my mind goes "Game. Wat r u doin. Game. Stahp." or something. Like in Starry Sky (in Spring, I think), during the white-haired tsundere's(from now referred to as WHT) route, the plot just got so filled with common shoujo scenes. For example, when someone was confessing to the girl and WHT came in and threatened the admirer, when the admirer sought revenge and WHT came and beat him up, when it was revealed WHT was and of course he tried to hide it from the girl because it would reduce his manly points, etc.
Protagonist Questions
- Spoiler:
- 1) What sort of personalities/qualities do you like best in a
protagonist? Should she be smart, or a bit of a screw-up? Polite, or
blunt? Or would you be willing to follow any protagonist, so long as she
weren't too despicable?I have been looking for a Elizabeth Bennet-esque protagonist recently. You know, smart, beautiful, has the ability to read people, not afraid to state her opinions but knows her place nonetheless and is still polite when the circumstance calls for politeness, brave, filled with curiosity but doesn't go endangering herself or her status by doing extraordinary things like sneak about to find answers to her questions, and possessing a big heart for those she care for (and an unshakeable determination to make life hell for those who hurt her loved ones). Basically, the brave lady type. But alas, I can not be picky.
2) What sort of character development
would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to
outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?I'm fond of the pessimistic to optimistic development. I'm fond of any sort of development so long as there is a development; I must admit I don't really take note of the protagonist's character well.
3)
Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal
standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's
more average?
[quote]I am sick and tired of MC's that can't, for heaven's sake, realize that the guy likes them regardless of what they might look like. I am sick and tired of reading "Me? But I'm just a normal person!", "What's so special about me?", yadda yadda yadda. A confident (ergo, beautiful, sadly) protagonist would be a nice change of pace.
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?Airheadedness. Period.
Story Questions
- Spoiler:
- 1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?I am happy to receive any ending from "kiss" to "marriage". Implied intimacy endings would just make me wonder if I really, truly, honestly, got the good end or not.
2)
Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or
share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather
indulge in the romance from the get-go?I like tsuntsun's and flirty types so... I like both? XD
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?Harem endings are fine so long as they are complete crack endings. I like jealousy/double endings (i.e. Lucky Rabbit Reflex) from time to time too.
I answered this the best that I can. It's sort of sad that this is the best that I can, but... meh. XD

If yes, what sorts of mini-games do you like to play, and at which point in your play (outside of the narrative like MCL/during events/etc.) do you feel they best add to the experience?
I enjoy some mini games, but prefer it when they don't have any major impact on the main game. I can't particularly think of any otome games at the moment where the mini games are necassary for certain endings, but I think it's the same for other games I have played. It's not a mini game, but when ME3 first came out you had to play the multiplayer to advance the game the way you wanted it. That's been changed, but it's not fun when you can't access certain endings/etc because of you either don't like mini games, or like me; are really shit at them. I have never EVER made good valentines chocolate in the Tokimeki series, AND I REALLY TRIED! But not making chocolate didn't really change the outcome of my games, so I didn't care too much.
REALLY mini games can just be a fun distraction, but I like them to be optional. I don't want to be forced to do them. (because I suck)
2) Is a voice-acting cast important to your otome experience? If no, do you see it as a bonus or an annoyance? If yes, what does the voice-acting add for you?
I don't care about voice-acting, I mean~ I enjoy it sometimes, but a lot of the time I like to be able to have my imagination come up with how I might think they sound. Although that's mostly in the case of the protagonist. I'd rather have a mute protagonist and voice-actors for the rest~ yesyes.
3) What sort of options do you like to have during and after gameplay? Dialog-skip buttons? Auto-dialog buttons? Buttons that allow you to read previous text? Etc.?
I like to be able to skip dialogue I've already been through, and re-reading text is always helpful for when I accidentally double click because I have the most unsteady hands ever. I DUNNO WHAT ELSE COULD BE USEFUL, I'm pretty content.
BOYS QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) Which boy personalities do you find you're most interested in when you play an otome game, and why? (ex: The bad boy, the gentleman, the ladies' man, etc.)
I have found I like nearly all of them as long as they have an interesting history and life. Every character just needs a little something for me to take interest, and then I'm hooked. BUT GENERALLY, my favourite guys are usually the strong silent type that are prone to massive blushing when in the presence of their love interest. But then I also really like fun and energetic types that are hiding some terrible feelings inside them OHHHTHESADNESS! Letmehealyou.
2) Which boy personalities could you live without in an otome game, and why?
I am not sure... I'm not a giant fan of the guys that are really sure of themselves and their looks? I usually find I develop a soft spot for all the guys, but characters like Bo from Yo-Jin-Bo and Majima Tarou from TMGS2 never really appealed to me, in fact I found Bo really lame.
But them I do love flirty characters like Virion in Fire Emblem Awakening and Adam in Pirates in Love... SO I DUNNO.
3) What sort of appearances appeal to you most? (ex: Blond hair, big eyes, evil grin, etc.)
THE ROUGH LOOKING GUYS, I like the tall and slightly older looking gentlemen. Of course as much as I'm drawn to these characters, they aren't necessarily going to be my favourite character.
I also like demonic and alien type characters so... Yeah.
My least favourite are the mega pretty boys but a lot of the time they're the main choice and therefore have awesome backgrounds and stories so they win me over that way.
4) How do you decide which boy to go after? Is it the way he looks? His first lines of dialog? His importance to the storyline?
I will usually go for the one I feel the least interested in the first go around, and then from then on it depends who I thought was the most interesting during that playthrough.
5) What would make you stop chasing after your favorite guy?
Well I don't know... Maybe if he was just playing with the heroine or
cheated or whatever. JUST DOING USUAL DOUCHEBAG THINGS? Or if his HIDDEN
PASSED turned out to be extremely lame and uninteresting. Bo in
Yo-Jin-Bo was apparently actually really smart or whatever? And so you
have to pretend you know what the hell he's going on about for him to
fall for the heroine? And it was all just kind of lame.
I really don't mind too much about how they act as long as they stand up for them selves every now and then. Or just have their own dreams and aspirations. If it's a game like Dandelion where the heroine has a determined name and life, then I like to see as much depth and detail in their life as the other characters.
As for games like Tokimeki where the female is kind of an empty shell you step into, that's not so bad. But sometimes it feels like your being pushed to be a certain way.
If a heroine is made out to be a shy and helpless girl, then I think that's cool, I get more irritated when a character is apparently meant to be good for something and still ends up being nothing but a burden. The heroine of Hakouki: Demon of the fleeting blossom at first glanced seemed like she'd turned out to be pretty cool; she has a little sword and everything! But at least to me, she was just a bit of a nuisance and disappointment.
2) What sort of character development would you most like to play through with the protagonist? Shy to outgoing? Pessimistic to optimistic? Naive to well-informed?
I like the sound of all of those! REALLY, any kind of development is good for me. I'd really like to see maybe something like, useless to usefull, because it's all well and good having a change of mind but a lot of the time I find the characters aren't doing much with this new found sense of meaning and whatever.
But I mostly just want them to be happy in the end, regardless of how they are.
3) Do you prefer when the protagonist's appearance matches your ideal standards of beauty (hourglass figure/flowing hair/etc.) or when she's more average?
I like them to be a little above average to meet the standards of the lads maybe. I don't really mind her being average, but I don't like it when she's looked down on in games by the extras for not being good enough for the love interest. it just makes me sad really! I think it's actually quite a nice bit of depth to a story but I am just not a fan of that sadness.
I like her to be on the same level as the guys, really. An even playing field.
4) What traits/mannerisms would completely turn you off from the protagonist?
Just... uselessness. I don't mind a bit of crying and whimpering but it can start to grate on my nerves after a while. SAYING THAT, if she's crying and whimpering but doing something useful regardless, then that's cool, that'd even be kind of interesting or funny.
My favourite heroines are like Heejung (Crappy mum, hard worker, hidden talents) and Christina (Actually fights things!)
ALSO! I love when it's the heroine's turn to be oblivious to the guy's affections, like in the Stary Sky series. I LOVE THAT! SO MUCH. She can be as useless as you like, but if she isn't the one doing the pining and the chasing I'm sold.
STORY QUESTIONS:
- Spoiler:
- 1) What goals do you strive to achieve in an otome game? A kiss? Implied "intimacy?" Marriage?
HAVING BABIES. Seriously, I'd like to get them as far into the couple universe as possible. I just want to know their happiness is assured. And how will their babies look and omg URGH I'm so sad but I seriously just like babies. And puppies. And just... small things.
But I'm also good if like, they're running towards each other at the end of a long battle, jumping over bodies and stumbling over dismembered limbs to reach each other and then the games goes dark and happy music plays. I'm content to use my imagination.
AT THE VERY LEAST THEIR SHOULD BE A KISS, hugging ain't good enough. MMMMHMM.
2) Do you prefer when the protagonist and the boy of your choice clash or share plenty of chemistry? Should he be hard to get, or would you rather indulge in the romance from the get-go?
I like a little clashing, I don't really like any quick romances. I like it when only one is currently in love and the other is taking their sweet time. BUT YEAH, when they initially hate each other and fight is always fun~ Like Pride and Prejudice with Mr Darcy and Elizabeth. ALL THE KINDS OF ROMANCE! Just as long as there is at least a kiss at the end~
3) Do you enjoy harem endings, or do you prefer to keep it monogamous?
WELL GEE, I dunno... I think as long as their all in love then it's groovy. I just need love, I don't care about anything else. MORALS? WHAT? FFFFFFFFFwho needs those.

Re: Otome Survey Time~
Her Cheshire Smile wrote:I have been looking for a Elizabeth Bennet-esque protagonist recently.
OH YES~ This would be great. I always loved Elizabeth Bennet. A character like her would be a wonderful MC in an otome game. I would explain why, but 'Her Cheshire Smile' already did a fine job.
Now that I think about it, there are a few Jane Austen heroines that I wouldn't mind seeing an otome game MC based off of.

Re: Otome Survey Time~
PFFFFF
I wrote a smidgen about Elizbeth and Darcy in my ramble and then saw people talking about Jane Austen. SO I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT WOW, awesome, I definitely love you people.
I heartily agree that a game in that style would be very enjoyable.
I mostly love her work because there's lots of drama and heartache but you still get happy endings. Which I also like to see in games~

FFFFF everyone is planning games and I'm just sat here thinking about thinking about maybe thinking about making a game.
