default Making your own visual novel/otome game?

Post by Xyryhll on 17/05/13, 04:50 pm

Hey, so months ago I was so inspired to make my own game idea .

I've a handful of short stories on hand and I think I could do some magic to turn it into a very simple Otome game. I can't remember where I found out about the Ren'Py software, but it was supposed to be used for making Visual Novels for pc.

I had a hard time using it as I can do nothing beyond MS Office and installing some games(where you just insert the disc and let wizard installer do it's magic) :nuu:
So that kinda killed my once burning desire.

Crying
Does anyone here ever made their own game? You know, at least "fan made"? I'm just curious what special software you use and if it is user friendly ^_^

I really want to make my own game - where my heroine is really smart and not an airhead. LOL Laughing dududu

Hello, Alera here and yup, I'm a creator, making my own games~ (Links to them could be found in my sig)

I have a couple of tips for you~ First: Try Novelty. [ [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ] It doesn't involve programming and should be pretty easy to create something with it. ( Though I haven't done it myself, I've just played around with the program. I'm a Ren'Py user. )

Another option you have is- find yourself a partner. Someone who would deal with all the technical stuff, if you really don't feel that comfortable with computers. You could just write the story and have someone else put it together for you. Working in a team has quite some benefits and could be fun! Of course there are some downsides as well, but if you find a reliable and serious person, then everything should go well.

If you're really interested in creating your own visual novels, I recommend you joining the LSF community. [ [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ] It's a great place to start looking for people as well.

Another place you could look for tips is here [ [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ]

Good luck! ^^ If you have further questions, just say~

 oops, I'm sorry Ame :pale:

Thank you very much Alera! So you use Ren'Py.. I'm now checking out the sites you recommended and indeed, having a partner must really lighten the task smile
Thank you again! :D

^Haven't used Novelty myself~ but I also started work on a few projects (try doing them one at a time or you might get overloaded ^^wink

There are a lot of online references, and Alera's right, the large and active community at Lemmasoft will help you with any problems you might have, and you can even talk to the creator themself, so don't be afraid to ask if you hit a programming snag or error or something.

The first thing I would do, is go through it like say any other process. Start with fully fleshing out your story. Most people I notice don't finish the story first and do other stuff, but I like to have my full story done and ready. You don't have to though.

No voice actors? No problem~! Move on to the next step, coding and art work and adding in all them fandanglies that make the game 'complete' but I'm not there yet, so I can't offer much advice. I'm still on the writing stage.

Its good to keep track of your diverging paths (if its a game that'll have multiple endings) to make sure you don't bump into an error or a 'dead end' while playing. WHere they don't fit the criteria for the ending but their on that path kinda thing...idk if I'm making sense. I'm just relating some Ren'Py errors I came across while beta testing my first game ;; its still not done though

ooh, yeah, I get what you mean. The story should be flawless Laughing dududu
I really wanna try using Ren'Py but for someone like me  I should try something "user friendly"
My next problem's the artwork. I have no problem imaging how the characters would look like, I'm just poor on execution :p
Anyways, thank you and I would like to play your game someday :D

Yes, it's a good idea to write your story first. Or at least have a rough version of it. Worry about the rest after that.

If you have your story and it's good, you could pretty easily 'attract' artists then who would be willing to help you, if they find the story interesting enough. Of course there's always an option to pay an artist as well, which is also nice and you could get some more high quality artwork. Depends on how serious you want your game to be.

But really, finish your story first~ Don't try to tackle all the problems at once, especially if this is your first game. Take your time~ Seek for advice and don't forget to have fun! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

^If you have an idea, you can give a description of what your characters are like, their personalities and how'd you'd want them to look and what expressions they'd have. But I guess when you're done story wise- all of that will fall into place ^^

I actually just threw myself into it and did a stream of conscious thing with my first one--there was a few themes I wanted to explore, some characters I wanted to use later, and music I really wanted to use.

I don't really suggest doing the same thing, but since I was doing it for a jam with a very short deadline (#pphsjam), I was more driven to finish it.

I'm a very visual person, so I find that drawing out the characters helps. I also use TWINE ( a program for writing text adventure games) to write out paths. I highly recommend checking it out--it's super easy to use and you can organize your storyline in a way where you can look at it.
