Piracy in the Visual Novel Community SURVEY. Empty Piracy in the Visual Novel Community SURVEY.

Post by Laramie Castiel 13/06/13, 01:45 am

NOTE: This is NOT a survey conducted by Otome Hearts or Bishounen Gemu Staff. This is purely for the sake of my future blog post.

Hello, everyone!

I've decided to write a blog post on piracy in the visual novel community. I searched for studies on this topic in both Japanese and English, but came up with nothing. That's why I created this survey.

I realise that the results I get won't be anywhere near the level of a proper study, but I rather report on a few facts rather than none or pulling them out of my arse.

Please, please, please don't take this as a green light to debate about piracy. I'm not here to start a war.

EDIT: Survey has now concluded, so I removed the link.

In case you're not certain, the survey is 100% anonymous and confidential.

Thank you in advance! =)

hey thanks for the initiative
looking forward to the post

although, i think u put way too many options for the questions for the number of ppl that were going to participate in it. that would spread the results very much, and lesser number of ppl would bother to read it all (i call it the tl;dr culture. no1 cares to read longer than a paragraph)

anyways

one more thing, i would have put in 'if there was a kickstarter to localize a game u were interested in, would u support it?'. or something about crowd-funding

Piracy in the Visual Novel Community SURVEY. Empty Re: Piracy in the Visual Novel Community SURVEY.

Post by Laramie Castiel 13/06/13, 12:58 pm

Thanks for your opinions, Aaeru!

After making this survey, I've painfully realised just how hard it is to make a good one, but I've learned a lot, too. While I've got people saying it's a good and extensive survey, there are ones who say it could have been better, too. It certainly did get long, and there are maybe parts I could have condensed or joined together.

The reason why I have a lot of options for some questions is- as some have pointed out already- because of the need to take into account of the fact that some support the English side of the industry a lot, but pirate the non-translated games.

That would have been a good question! I have included questions about supporting the industry, which will hopefully encompass the question you suggested.

Wow, thank you very much! =D

I made this survey just to gather some information (rather than it being an attempt to resemble a credible study), but I've gotten way more responses than I thought.

Piracy in the Visual Novel Community SURVEY. Empty Re: Piracy in the Visual Novel Community SURVEY.

Post by Laramie Castiel 15/06/13, 03:14 pm

Of course I do!

I've got more than 500 responses now. I was expecting 300 at most. From what I've been hearing, some people have been reblogging, linking to, etc. my survey. Some have asked, most haven't. I'm not concerned, though.

I've got almost 200 comments now, so I can't promise that my blog post will answer to everyone's comments, alice3ify. However, when I said that I don't want to categorise any side of the argument, I truly mean it. I don't think all pirates are evil, nor do I think all buyers are doing "good". The latter is especially puzzling to some, but I will address that in my post or a future one.

Thanks for the response!

I understand if it is like 500+ I'm sure it'll take a lot of time to read and process the results (o_o).

Now that I think about it, I think the poll I filled in contained more than 2k words. ;; (Sorry). But nah. I trust you enough to view and write the post objectively without including subjective stands in either both sides.

I am going to wait for your post soon Laramie. x) It has always welcoming to see peeps doing things for VN community (which is tiny tad a little compare to the other communities).

Piracy in the Visual Novel Community SURVEY. Empty SURVEY RESULTS!

Post by Laramie Castiel 29/06/13, 09:32 am

Sorry for the double post again, but I just wanted to update and announce the results! Thanks to all whom participated.

A quick guide: the results will be posted in a "percentage of people who selected the response; amount of people that selected the response" format (e.g., 50%; 100 [people]). 606 people participated in total, however, due to a variety of reasons (some questions were added in later, some people didn't answer or forgot to answer certain questions, etc.), some questions didn't have all 606 people answering them. The top answer(s) will be highlighted in red for those that are only interested in which response(s) had the highest frequencies.

1) I am aged:
Under 13: 0.8%; 5
14~17: 25.5%; 154
18~24: 54.8%; 331
25~30: 14.7%; 89
31~39: 3.5%; 21
40~49: 0.7%; 4
50+ : 0%; 0

2) Your current employment status is best described as:
Full time (30~40 hours per week): 13.9%; 84
Part-time (Below 30 hours per week): 11.4%; 69
I'm an apprentice, or otherwise, 'earning as I learn': 4.3%; 26
I'm an unemployed student.: 59.5%; 359
I'm not a student and I'm unemployed.: 10.8%; 65

3) How regularly do you play/read visual novels?
Everyday, or close to everyday.: 19.2%; 116
Very often: 37.3%; 225
Sometimes: 26.5%; 160
Occasionally: 13.9%; 84
Rarely: 3.1%; 19

4) Please select the statement that best describes your frequency of pirating visual novels:
I regularly pirate them regardless of the language: 12.6%; 76
I regularly pirate them. However, not releases I can get in English: 8.3% 50
I pirate quite often, but I wouldn't say 'regularly'. However, not releases I can get in English: 7.9%; 48
I pirate quite often, but I wouldn't say 'regularly'. The language doesn't influence my decision: 7.8%; 47
I sometimes pirate visual novels. The language doesn't influence my decision: 8.8%; 53
I sometimes pirate visual novels. However, not releases I can get in English: 13.6%; 82
I rarely pirate visual novels. However, not releases I can get in English: 11.3%; 68
I rarely pirate visual novels. The language does not influence my decision: 3.6%
I have done so maybe once or twice, but never do now: 8.8%; 53
I have never pirated any, and still haven't done so: 13.2%; 80
I do not pirate visual novels, but I used to: 4.1%; 25

NOTE: I just wanted to add how I definitely should have split this question into two. My goal was to try and see how much a visual novel being in English influences the decision to pirate or not. I could have easily separated frequency and English questions, so, sorry about that! I have no idea why I didn't just do that, honestly...

5) If you chose any statement other than 'I have never pirated any, and still haven't done so', please select the statements below that best illustrate your reason(s) for doing so:
I wasn't able to get it in English: 46.7%; 283
It isn't/wasn't available in my country.: 43.2%; 262
I can't/couldn't afford the games themselves and/or the shipping costs. 35.5%; 215
The particular game I wanted to play wasn't sold anywhere: 30.2%; 183
I think/thought that the game(s) is/are too expensive. 27.1%; 164
The shipping costs are/were too expensive: 27.1%; 164
There isn't/wasn't a demo available, so I wanted to see what it was like. 15.7%; 95

I don't/didn't agree with the current laws surrounding piracy (copyright infringement, intellectual property laws, etc.) 5.8%; 35

6) If you have pirated a visual novel before, but decided to stop, what influenced your decision?

11) If all visual novels were released in English, would this influence your decision to pirate it?
Not at all: 8.7%; 50
It depends on the game itself- language isn't everything: 17.3%; 100
I think I would pirate less: 21.3%; 123
I think I would stop pirating: 17.1%; 99
I never pirate any visual novel I can read in English, so this question isn't applicable to me: 20.8%; 120

12) If you enjoyed a particular visual novel you pirated, which of the following factors influences your decision to purchase a copy of it?

I think I have expected the highest choices would be those of the red sentences .. figures ... (Some are still surprising though).

Will you do a post where you will fully analysis this survey Laramie?

Post by Laramie Castiel 02/07/13, 01:53 pm

No worries, both of you.

I'm working on the post, and yes, it will be an analysis of sorts. I hope to be able to explore the reasons why I think certain questions got certain answers.

I've also discovered that I'll probably want to do a second post just regarding the reasons why people pirate and a brief explanation of piracy in the visual novel community (free of legal jargon), because many respondents are fuzzy when it comes to the legality.

It's surprising how many people are getting screwed over with bad shopping choices and such. So I'll probably elaborate on that, too.

Glad to see you're doing well! There haven't seen any updates from you in a while, so I was wondering if RL caught up to you.
