Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
A very popular topic when it comes to otome MC is if the heroine is better with or without face. Some people find faceless heroines to be creepy, other don't mind them so what is your stance?Do you prefer faceless heroines like in Voltage games or with a face?Or you prefer to have a off\on option (Black Wolves Saga has that option, if I'm not mistaken)?
Personally, I prefer if the heroine has a face - I like seeing her emotions on her face. That and she freaks me out with no face .Would be nice if the MC can depict more emotions - the majority only have a happy, sad, shocked and blushing face.

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
Ah, the faceless heroines. They kinda remind me of the old cartoons where you never see the adult's faces and the cartoon goes out of the way to hide those faces. Or the Charlie Brown cartoons that don't even have actual voices for the adults.
Personally, I hate faceless MCs. I understand the point of them, but they have other characteristics that you can't control (hair, clothes, even certain choices). Why just veil the face?

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
I've never played a game with a faceless MC, but I've seen some CGs in reviews with those sort of MCs. For me it looks odd. All these guys are falling in love with some girl that has no face. Our faces identify who we are. Sadly if someone has severe damage to their face no one is likely to recognize them. I know the MC is supposed to be given a face by our own imaginations, but I am not a person who places myself in the MC role. I don't even want to. To me an otome game is a story about someone else that I can squeal over how cute (or sometimes disturbing) it is. While I don't mind that some people identify with it, I also don't understand that need/desire.
So anyway, I like my MCs to have faces. They already do plenty of things that are a major disconnect from my own personality. I can't count the times where I've been free playing a game, trying to make all the choices that are the most natural to me, only to find that almost none of the answers would be my choice if I were there. There's no way that with or without a face the MC could ever be me. That being said, just give the poor girl a face of her own.

I dunno, I greatly dislike the faceless MC. Also, It feels like some of the camera angles in the CG's including her are somewhat awkward at times. But that's just what I think.
I pretty much agree with what everyone's saying too. They seriously need to make an otome game with a customizable MC. If they did, I'd absolutely love that

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
This is something I've wondered about, and blue star raised a good point. I'm also not one to place myself in the MC role, I want to give someone else their happy end. But there are people who place themselves in that role, give their MC a name etc etc. But its kinda hard for me (a black chick) to imagine myself in the role when I see a long haired white skinned snow white beauty in the CG...oh with no face.
I don't mind the faceless MC or the missing MC (where you don't see them at all, and the character is really looking at you both in game and in CGs). I like it if its done properly. but if you have this character type in mind and they have:
1. a set personality that's non-negotiable.
2. a distinct back story that's driving the plot forward. and other misc things...
I mean idk why give it a distinct anything if its gonna be faceless? If its faceless then it needs to be a shell MC that can be bent by my will. Otherwise give her a face and a personality and all that jazz. Or do what Miari says put a customizeable option in there.

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
I don't mind it when people place themselves in the heroine's shoes, but I prefer it when the heroines are people. Rather than make them faceless and have a cookie cutter personality, I want them to be as fleshed-out as the guys themselves, and then have relatable characteristics. Rather than fall in love with a guy, I want to fall in love with their relationship.

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
Faceless... creeps me.... a lot. I don't know about you guys, but when ever I see a faceless heroine, I keep having flashbacks of Slenderman :affraid: We all know that they do that to make there cardboard heroines so that they can absorb the readers into there own shoes, but there are much better ways to do that.
1. Don't even put her in any CG. Just draw every CG from the heroine's point of view. It's a lot more effective that way
2. Be like Facade where the readers can say what they want to say.... but that would be programming hell for the programers xD. Then the next best thing would be to have multiple personalities for the cardboard heroine. The readers could choose the personalities that fits them the best, or make her as dumb or smart as the players want
If they aren't gonna do any of the above, then they should fill up their cardboard heroines with a personality and story of her own, AND GIVE HER A FREAKIN FACE!!!!!

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
I think it all comes down to being relatable. You want as the player to feel for the character, laugh, cry and feel joy. You almost have a wall between you and an faceless heroine. Yes, you can create this character but in the end you can only do so much. But following a story and a heroine you can follow them, almost step into their shoes "feel" as they go through their trials.

I'd like it if one day all otome games magically had the option to create your own character, with the face of course. ^_^ Along with the option of having the chara faceless if people prefer.

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
LOL when I read faceless herroine, it's just remind me of Tsukiko in Starry Sky
Well, personally I don't really like faceless herroine... and cgs like kissing scene in starry sky [what? did we really want to kiss psp/pc screen?]
and faceless herroine give this hikki vibe like main heroine at yamato nadeshiko... and feels distant... like somewhat she doesn't have any personality...
*just try looking at starry sky cgs, with face on and off...
Nice main character design is making me fired up when playing otoge

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
When I play games I don't self-insert, so a heroine without a face is pretty boring for me. I also think it's kind of creepy...
I think it would be even better if the heroines where voiced like in Danzai no Maria, but I can only hope this much...

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
I don't really like it, because a lack of eyes (or at its worst no features whatsoever) is kinda creepy. Tsukiko looks much better with eyes.
Anyway, I think this "debate", if you could call it that, is an element of characterisation arguments of the protagonist herself- which I've been meaning to explore on a website I write for for a while. When I play otome games, I never imagine myself as the protagonist, beyond the standard, "I think I'd [X] if I were her" kind of thing. Empathisation, not "becoming her".
Most people I know, Japanese and Western, aren't really interested in turning themselves into protag-chan. They tend to not even use the name changing function. It seems like the devs are insistent that fans do want this, but I think it's just a convenient excuse so that they don't have to put a lot of effort into a character that appears for such a high percentage of the game- saves time and money, I suppose!
CGs and voice acting are amongst the largest expenses when creating a visual novel, so cutting efforts off of both for a prominent character is efficient. Interesting, I've been finding that R18+ otome games tend to have a voiced main character, and they have a higher likelihood of having "more" to them (doesn't mean they're good characters, though).

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
@[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] I never change my protagchan name lol - because yes I never think myself to be her... Most of R-18 protag is voiced, I think because it makes the icha icha time more lively? (although some player complained how the protag voice annoyed them...)
Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
@chiruchan: Yeah, I guess it is a little strange when it's only the guys making the noises they do and the protag-chan is voiceless.
I do hear complaints about the female's "noises", too. The female seiyuu they pick tend to specialise in male-oriented adult games. For example, Natsuno Koori as Tiana in Akazukin to Mayoi no Mori and Isshiki Hikaru as Minase Arisu/Alice in Trick or Alice. The complaints tend to come from Western players that are unused to a Japanese female's higher pitches.
It doesn't really bother me, personally. I do turn the volume down because it hurts my ears, but I'd rather both partners "express their pleasure" than it being just the guy. I guess it's also a lot cheaper to not include female voices, especially on the eroge side since it costs more money than normal.

LooooL I never realized that those complaints come from western player. XD
I'm an asia and I have high pitched voice too, so I have no problem with that...
Yes they use eroge female seiyuus, maybe because they used to voiced R-18 game?
Arisu Trick or Alice is pretty cute actually, but yeah sometimes her voice is a bit too high...

Yeah, they do use female seiyuu from eroge because of their experience. However, lately I've been seeing some new people. They seem so new that I can't actually find their "real names". Like the two ladies that were casted in the upcoming Jooubachi no Oubou and Saki from Sakuragatari.chiruchan wrote:LooooL I never realized that those complaints come from western player. XD

That Jooubachi, if they really make it based on dramaCD it's going to be asdfghjkl:kyaa: - I haven't play sakuragatari since I blown up my pc sound device...orz
The only problem with trick or alice is hiyo being scenario writer... her stories sometimes confusing... and that artwork is too innocent and pure for R-18 game...
I heard a lot of people like Kurumi from Ijiwaru My Master

Re: Faceless heroine - like or dislike?
Yeah, Jooubachi no Oubou is going to be based on the drama CDs, so it's definitely going to be an R18+ game, no questions about that! I got the latest Cool-B and read an article about it. I'm quite interested in it!
Sakuragatari has many bugs, so be sure to download the latest patch from the official website! Otheriwse some routes just cut off or their voices disappear. It's pretty unplayable without that patch.
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of hiyo. Japanese is my second language, and I grew up bilingual my entire childhood. My point is, my Japanese isn't perfect but it's good enough to grasp most otome games. Even native Japanese speakers were confused with Trick or Alice, so it seems it isn't just a language barrier. Her writing is confusing in the wrong way.
At least Trick or Alice isn't as rape-infested as her previous stuff. I don't have a problem with rape fantasies or whatever, but I think how she implements it in her works is really cheap. Arisu is a good protagonist. hiyo will be a director in the upcoming Torikago no Marriage, so hopefully she'll do a better job directing rather than writing.
As for Ijiwaru My Master, I'm surprised to hear that people like Kurumi, 'cause my impression was that she pissed players off for being so weak. I'm not a big fan of her.

I haven't play Ijiwaru My Master myself,
but yes I found some people saying she's very cute (maybe from man playing R-18 otome games?)
Yes, I've listened to Jooubachi dramaCD and it contains some ropeplay
It's going to be very interesting if they put it in that game lol
Wow, I'm very envious you could understand Japanese that much
because I depend 80% on my hearing skills, can't read all those kanjis
A lot of people surprised why hiyo doesn't put a rape scene in trick or alice, lol
I'm not a big fan of her too...
because her non-ecchi writing is also confusing (Noah and Noel dramaCD)
She just jumping one plot from another... =_=
Yes, let's hope her upcoming work will be good...

I recently listened to the latest Jooubachi CD... I love Takahashi Hiroki so I got all :kyaa:and everything~ So many great seiyuu are in Jooubachi... I can't wait for the game! I'll break my wallet just to get both Menou and Kaguya-hen, heehee. This will be Eguchi Takuya's first R18+ thing, I believe, unless he has another alias somewhere that I don't know of.
I don't think I've ever heard or read hiyo's non-H stuff. Truth be told, I don't follow writers so extensively- especially in the R18+ world- because they tend to have a lot of aliases and are really hard to keep up with. Lots of once-offers that disappear. However, hiyo is pretty popular so she shouldn't have that problem. I think hiyo has some interesting ideas, but fails to execute well. She needs an honest assistant!
