Re: Otome Gamer's Problems - the List.
Ahaha these are all so true XD To add to the list:
Add-On/Extended Editions with more content...on a different platform -_-;
Super Special Awesome editions with a pre-order bonus that's only available from that one shop that won't ship internationally D:
Re-releases of the same game on a different platform with no changes/less features
No more PS2 otome games [what? XD]
That one character you like most of the cast is unobtainable/NPC [this happens to me way too often, lol]
Not a lot of otome games get actual recognition
Can't afford all the awesome merchandise [may only be applicable to UtaPri for me right now |D]
Glitchy games
When a character in an otome game looks/acts/sounds like a character from somewhere else

Though some of those were mentioned already, they're all good points!
If a shop won't ship internationally, you can always use Yokatta or another shipping service. It's what I do and it works great for me! ^^
Re: Otome Gamer's Problems - the List.
I forgot to add this!
#??: Even though I'm in Asia, buying an otome game is like paying for a phone for multiple of times since it's so so expensive.
#??: Those tokutens that only Japanese could get in a Japanese-only zone. Proxies exist but they are expensive ;-; (sobs I think it's pretty much the same with Fandramon mentioned earlier)
#??: Discussion about otome games are only visible in the internet. My friends do not like and do not know about otome games.I'm sad

Re: Otome Gamer's Problems - the List.
#??: When you're already invested in a character route but then the character does something that disturbs/angers you to the point that you don't like them anymore, but you still want to keep playing to see what happens in the end.
(I'm talking about Alan from Voltage Inc.'s "Pirates in Love". I'll put my example under spoilers in case anyone here is currently playing his route.)

- Spoiler:
- He brings her to his room, then suddenly (VERY SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING) undresses and tries to force himself on her to make her agree to being his wife or something like that. She accidentally knocks him out to get away and then they act like it never happened later on...I guess it was supposed to be comedic or something but I can't really come to terms with that...I eventually played through the route but I don't think I will be again.

Re: Otome Gamer's Problems - the List.
Who's feeling productive enough to keep count? XD
#??: When a character is a major pain in the - and you really don't want to play his route but you feel a need to because, gosh darn it, his voice is just so dreamy and you want to hear more.
#??: When you just finished Boy 1's route and are going for Boy 2 and even though you know if you're nice to Boy 1, you'll just get his ending again, you don't have to will to be a jerk to Boy 1. He already has a special place in your heart.
#??: When the cool type character suddenly becomes extremely and obsessively mushy-gushy that all respect for him is gone for good. Am I the only one?
#??: When, even though you're aware that 2D boys don't have feelings, you don't have the heart to pick mean dialogue. You're literally a (2D)people pleaser.
#??: When you have the perfectly witty and charming dialogue in your head but it's not in the choices.

#50 When you have no money to buy that certain game you are itching to play. Sigh.
#51 When you daydream about that certain otome guy which always results to fanfics
#52 Hoping those 2D guys would be like Sadako and would crawl out of your screen.
Sigh.

The current problems list.
...And here I thought of making the list for you, since I love making lists. Especially for Topaztan. My heart bleeds when I await a reply from her---*derails into creepy declerations of love.*
Fine, allow me to continue with some more problem-oes! There are many... I think 200 problems is possible with this genre. ;P
#58: When your "plan to play" backlog expands at a scarily higher rate than what you actually complete.
#59: When the protagonist is 100 PASENTO INOSENTO VIRGIN that has a worryingly low sexual interest but suddenly becomes "The Best Prostitute in Kazakhstan" kinda sexual freak when on the obligatory 3P and/or sex 24/7 ending. It doesn't seem like the guy has anything in his sexual repertoire that warrants such an obsession.
#60: When otome game writers use extreme "donkan" or "innocence" as a pass for the protagonist to pretty much lead on two guys.
IRL girl does it = SLUT/SKANK!
Otome game protagonist does it = WELL SHE'S INEXPERIENCED!
#61: Sort of an addendum of #60- if the protagonist didn't know she was leading two guys on, and actually made some kind of decision that brings closure to the problem, then all is well. Problem is, they tend to still be "confuzzled" and rarely make a decision. "Sorry for leading you two on. So yeah, I'll keep on leading you two on."
#62: Goody-goody two-shoes protagonists. The majority seem to be like this; even the more "strong" ones. I know for certain that I don't want to imagine myself as such a boring character.

Nah, I won't shoot you for that. The thing with "donkan"- like most character archetypes that lean towards a gag/novelty- is that they get overexaggerated to the point of ridiculousness. Yes, visual novels aren't the best place to look for believable characters. Donkan is hard to get right, I think, because it's not a good idea to go over the "line" of acceptible density.alice3ify wrote:Pffft, I can't help but to agree with this!Though, it's not like I don't like donkan type of heroines *shot*
Srsly, when somebody is a blushing mess around you and stutters... Unless:
A) You have a reputation for being scary
B) The guys in question behaves like this around everyone/every girl for whatever reason
...Then it's pretty much always the most obvious indication of attraction save for a genuine confession.
I still strongly dislike the donkan trope, but it's forgiveable if it's not used as a lazy tool to create conflict.
One could blame the guys for not growing a pair and just telling the donkan how he feels as straightly as he can. If he really likes her, he should realise that she won't ever realise and that he'll have to make the first move.
Now that I think about it, the guys in a donkan girl x standard guy pairing can be just as frustrating.

I see.. Overly clumsiness is frustrating too, and I can visibly see that from your statement. Hmm, I do wonder which otome heroine that looks like that?

Frustating and boring, that. I guess I am liking a donkan if it gets paired well with the guy. But overly donkan is a no no for me too.

Re: Otome Gamer's Problems - the List.
Which otome heroines are too dense? I'd say Yahisa Tsukiko from Starry Sky is pretty bad in this regard, especially in the ~in~ series. She gets better in the ~After~ fandiscs, but sadly, it fluctuates depending on whose route she's on.
Hayasaka Satsuki from Sumire no Tsubomi )R18+) is your typical dense, clumsy, plain and timid protagonist. She has more of a backstory that explains her demeanour- at least- in romantic situations. Still, it's frustrating, because the main guy she's supposed to be with is a tsundere... so I'm sure you can see where this is going. Still, Sumire no Tsubomi is one of the better R18+ out there. If you ever do pick it up... do Touwa's route, haha.
I think the reason why "donkan" is so common is because not only can it excuse the protagonist from being a "two-timer", but it also helps extend the plot. The longer she doesn't realise, the less pressure there is to come up with a point where she has to accept her feelings and make a new series of emotional decisions.

Oh, Yahisa. Now that I can see what truly a donkan (honestly, I did not really understand about this term before you mentioned Yahisa). After discs are always better (but not so in some routes, there are some routes that have waaaay too many dramas), damn Honeybee

If you ever do pick it up... do Touwa's route, haha.
I will do keep it mentally noted in my backlog after I finished with some of my unfinished otome games ; w ; )/

Yeah, and that doesn't seem to help the plot, rather, they will make it looks more cliched, and dramatic (which, to our dismay, is not really needed).

Ah, if I could just write a thesis on how much I dislike the "donkan" archetype....I am so sick of this by now. And Tsukiko might be among the biggest offenders when it comes to this. I remember all the table flips I did when playing Starry Sky....
Yeah, you have a good point there, that might be the reason for its popularity. Or maybe people just like feeling smart when they can predict the male characters' interest in the heroine earlier than the heroine herself. :/

If you ever do write this hypothetical thesis- LINK ME! I love reading that kind of stuff. If I didn't have much exposure to Japanese media before playing Starry Sky, I would have genuinely though Tsukiko had some kind of weirdly convenient and selective autism.vocaotome wrote:Ah, if I could just write a thesis on how much I dislike the "donkan"

I never even thought about the "people wanting to feel smarter" angle. Probably because most of the guys aren't exactly unobvious- therefore, not making me feel too much like Sherlock Holmes Jr. for uncovering their intentions. However, it is satisfying to realise things before the protagonist.
