Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
Oh my god. I was waiting for somebirdie to speak up for the pigeons. 8D It's such a nice game for its price! I've only gone through: Nageki, Ryouta, and Kazuaki's route though so now I must do more!! :3
Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
Nageki was my favorite in this game. His story was just so bittersweet. It's not a healthy sign, but I also loved Iwamine Shuu. I literally imagine Koyasu Takehito voicing all his lines while I play. Anghel was another major cutie. I felt like I was kid playing pretend with my best friend throughout his entire route XD.
Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
I just recently started playing Hatoful- I'm part of the way through Sakuya's route, and I finished/got Ryouta's on my first blind playthrough.
I was a bit skeptical at first, I still am, but I hear it gets really really good.

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
Great thread idea!
I've completely finished the game (the full version), and I must say, it's way better than a fair amount of otome games that got much more credit than it. I walked into this thinking it was a completed joke- basically, I was going to "play it for the lulz". Most of the routes were very well-written, and the protagonist is epic.
I urge the readers here who haven't got the full version to go and get it whenever they can. The extra route they add on is pretty much essential in totally elevating HB from its "lolarious excuse plot" impression.
Also, I recommend those that don't care about spoilers/like LPs to check out Angie Gallants ones here:

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
I've been wanting to play this game. I've seen cry play it and thought it was interesting. BIRD LOVE. LOL.
Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
I tried so hard to like this game because I have tons of friends who love it and I keep hearing it has a good, emotionally moving plot... ..........but I just...... can't get interested in a game about birds I guess it's not a good game for sticks in the mud with no sense of humor like yours truly lol.
But I wish they'd bring out a gijinka version, cough. I'd definitely play it if it just had people for character portraits.

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
The gijinkas look great, but that would defeat the whole point of the game... especially once you learn of the overarching plot, everyone being human wouldn't work. I think that HB wouldn't be nearly as good if the birds were human.

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
I've avoided the game since I knew about it. I planned to play it once, thinking it was like that game where the protagonist suddenly finds a basket of animals and the animals turned into humans? Then I found out they were not magically turned pigeons, they were real, honest-to-goodness pigeons. Birds. Non-humans. Non-mammals. No... just no. Also, I found this little [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.](I'm not even sure if the site still works) and frankly I just got creeped out. Especially by the fat, doctor pigeon.
However, a lot of people seem to like it and I'm caving. Is it really good? Are the screenshots on the site about (in case it doesn't show)
legit?

- Spoiler:
- Doctor bird killing the heroine and putting her organs in jars or some sort and sending you fried chicken which turned out to be one of your classmates THAT YOU ATE to fatten you up or something and one of your pigeon classmates being some agent to stop the evil deeds of Doctor bird?
legit?

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
Man, Angie Gallant's LPs are amazing!
Anyway:
Hatoful Boyfriend is much better executed than a lot of otome games on the market atm. Plus it's super cheap at like $5 for the full version. I strongly recommend you play the full version for maximum enjoyment.

- The screenshots are not legit. They were pictures fans drew as a joke. The events do actually happen, but you don't see the gory details.

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
It's really funny. I spent hours just reading the whole thread when I found this.
The non-pigeon portraits are cute. Fat Doctor Bird is actually gorgeous. Now why couldn't they have stuck with that. *sigh* I'm going to try the demo first before actually considering. But... maybe.
- Spoiler:
- So no protagonist eating her classmate and having a quill pen made of said classmate?

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
- Spoiler:
- No, that is all true. However, any picture of it actually happening is likely to be a fake or a fan-made joke, such as the one of Shuu rolling around in guts.
Maybe I'm just a loony, but I didn't see the big deal/disgust in the characters being all birds but the protagonist. I find it to be funny rather than a disappointment. I chose not to see the portaits until I finished every route, because it I felt as though it would be breaking one of its points.
Yes, Shuu is gorgeous. They're all pretty cute, actually.

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
Creepy doctor dude. Very creepy doctor dude.
It's amusing, I'll grant it that. I just get a little put off by the live bird portraits. At first glance, when I saw it on English Otome Games, I thought it was a parody on otomes. Also, birds sort of creep me out with their beady little eyes.

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
Ah, that makes sense. I really like birds, so I thought they were all rather cute. Now that I said that in this thread, I have a strong need to clarify that I don't mean I "really like birds" in THAT way.
It is somewhat of a parody. Especially with Shuu, whom I guess was supposed to be a parody of terrible boyfriends in the shoujo/otome game genre to an overexaggerated extent.

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
I'll be honest, I was more skeptical at the beginning because of the entire pigeon thing. It doesn't help that I read about the game off of a cracked article, and they downplay[or made me get disgusted by it] lots of things so I couldn't really get into it. Several months being introduced into dating sims got me interested in getting one for the PC and this happened to be the first one I picked up for it. XD Besides (p)lanets, which a friend gave me and I deleted cause I didn't play. v-v [shame on me I shoulda kept it]
I really liked the pricing too cause I was getting pissed at a certain game for sapping my money for energy, and I was pleasantly surprised. After dying the first ending that is, cause apparently being indecisive kills. Poo. I think I was gonna go for the teacher first but changed my mind and went for Nageki. <3

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
A lot of the time, Cracked articles are played for laughs, so I tend not to judge things on there until I try it myself.
All-in-all, it rests on personal opinion in the end, but I only encourage people to look past the bird thing and try it out. Sure, there are lots of WTF things that make little sense, but over all, it was a short, if not fun ride.
I think I should also dispel the myth that this game fetishises birds. There are no mentions of even kissing. There is practically zero physical displays of affection (if there were any at all). It says "dating sim", but the "romantic" aspects are mostly played for laughs and light-heartedness. It's by no means a deep exploration of interspecies romance.
Again, you must play the "main" story of the full version to truly understand its story. It explains a lot of the WTF stuff.

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
I agree with everything you say. I stopped taking what they said seriously a long time ago, but I read that article I'd say about 2 years ago so hahah I don't remember much. Honestly after playing 3 routes I've noticed there aren't lots of contact [if any] with the pigeons, but I always thought it was because you couldn't do much anyway. XD
Oh I've heard of it, but I think because I'm aware of that route that I've been putting it off cause I'm a wimp and am scared of what I may find out. -hides under blanket covers-

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
Heck yes a Hatoful Boyfriend thread *_*
I love this game! I like how you're not supposed to take it seriously, but if you keep going you find yourself getting emotional about birds. It's really well written, and well executed. I really admire the creator for making it pretty much single-handedly.
I agree with Laramie in that this game does not fetishize birds. You don't really go on dates with them. Although! if you play the sequel- Holiday Star- there's a bonus section where you can go on a date with them in human form (or bird form if you prefer to stick to the traditional hatoful way lol)

As much as I love the human forms (especially of Shuu and Ryouta's), I still think that it kind of defeats the purpose of the dating sim having bird love interests. A lot of people now choose the human options whenever possible, and practically imagine the human forms as they play through the sections they must stick with the birds. I think I mentioned this previously, but I didn't look at the human forms until I finished the game 100%.
It irks me a little when people say, "if only they were human", "I would have played this game if they were humans", etc. Not only is it a silly comment if they actually played the full version or read about it more, but it took good writing to make the audience empathise with the birds as though they were human beings- especially in my case, since they were birds through and through the entire time in my mind.
That being said, I've already bought HolidayStar, and just see what dating the human forms in that plot would be like.
LOL, Oko-san is a total riot! He made me speechless, which is an amazing feat.Roxas4ever wrote:If I buy this game, it will definitely be for Oko-san

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
I remember I used to judge this game a lot before I ever gave it a chance. I never pictured the idea of a game about Bird Love actually being good. Then I decided to play it to make my friend stop nagging me about it and once I finished the full version I felt so wrong about life... The game had an absolutely amazing story that is really rare to find for a game of its price and subject. I really can't say I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
I think my favorite character turned out to be Nageki~ (He's so adorable)

Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
*Rolls in sadistic tears* I decided on going for completion and have yet to do Anghel's or the BBL ending yet, but I will say that I am SUPER PISSED at Shuu b/c spoiler ending reasons. >:T Then I played Yuuya's route and I'm slightly happy again huuhuu~ I know this is probably an odd post after several something weeks of inactivity, please excuse me...*flys away*
Re: Hatoful Boyfriend
I'm sure it's a great game, but I couldn't bring myself to finish playing it. Bird love is not my cup of tea.
